Having returned from overseas living this summer (4 years in Moscow), I thought I was coming home to the land of customer service. Yes, I am back in the country that cares about what the customer wants. But what I actually found out was that the current economy has produced a system where many companies rest on their laurels and do not care about customers' needs.
USAA is a clear outstanding exception, which is even more remarkable given that they are part of one of the least customer-driven service industries - insurance.
I have been floored by the caring of the customer agents, and their focus on my needs and concerns. Would you believe that I called USAA to sign up for auto insurance, and that 30 minutes after completing that phone transaction, a customer service agent actually called me to alert me that since I had moved to the US I should change my homeowner's policy so that I could save $200 a year. Unbelievable!
Also, this is a company that actually pays out claims, promptly, with no hassles. They also try to work with the customer to find the best, most economical insurance arrangement, even if it means less money for them.
Finally, USAA is a company that returns money (if it makes money) to its customers that make no claims, in the form of returned dividends. The only problem is that USAA is not open to all of the general public, you must be in the military or other parts of the US Government (like the State Department). But, if you can get this insurance, absolutely go for it - it's the best!!!
