Whatever you do, don't sign up for insurance through this company!! I have been a member less than a month and I am already very very unhappy.

I had thought of getting Pet Insurance after our first dog, Oscar (a dachshund), was hit by a car. He died, but had he lived, he would have required expensive surgery and long term care. He was also hit in Canada, and the main reason I considered VPI was cause you could use any vet - anywhere. I called VPI and was informed that they specifically cover any back problems that are common in dachshunds. I think that sealed the deal. I joined immediately. But after reading the numerous opinions on here, I don't believe that to be true.
I signed up for the Gold Plan along with the routine care package. Well, when I joined, I signed up for the monthly debits from my checking account. I signed up for it to come out on the 5th, yet 6 days ago (April 20th), my account was debited the $18.50 for my monthly payment. Well, I haven't even been a member for a month yet, and I have already made 3 payments to this company. Well, I called to tell them that they screwed up and tried to get it switched to the 5th, but was told, very rudely, that if I switched it to the 5th, I would also be debited on May 5th! I couldn't believe it. So in less than one month of having a policy, I would have paid 4 times!! Tell me how that makes sense.
So I left it on the 20th, knowing that I will be canceling the policy long before the next payment would be debited. Also, when I was speaking with the Customer Service person, she was very rude, and actually hung up on me after I told her that as soon as I got reimbursement for the pending claim I had, I would be canceling the policy. I had taken my dog to the vet on April 15 for his routine care and I am currently waiting for payment. They told me when I signed up that they pay the reimbursements in 7-10 days. Well it has now been 9 business days and when I call to find out what is happening with the claim, they say it has 5-10 more days of processing left!! I think that is well beyond 7-10 days. I was also told that there is no deductible for the Routine Care, but some people have written Opinions stating that isn't the case.
I will come back and update my Opinion as soon as I receive my reimbursement and that will tell me whether there was any deductible.
All in all, there are many negative things about this company - the worst being their horrible customer service. I intend to speak to a manager when I cancel my policy and let them know how badly I was treated and by who. I believe that they misrepresent themselves as being something that they're not!!!
*UPDATE* 5/12/01 - I received my reimbursement on 5/10/01. So it took them 5 days short of a month to process my claim, which was a simple Routine Care Claim. Imagine how long it would take for anything major!!! I cancelled my policy the same day I got my check.
