| sunsea99's Full Review: Veterinary Pet Insurance |
Four months ago we brought "Luke" home. Our little yellow lab was the specimen of health with one of the sweetest dispositions I've ever seen. He quickly became an irreplaceable part of our family. (Just as important as our two legged relatives I might add.)
With the above said, you'd think I'd be satisfied knowing Luke had come from a reputable breeder and his puppy energy should carry him for years to come...however, something was nagging at me...my experience working for an internet company (www.timeto.com) has taught me the value of preparing for the future and staying informed. Since our site focuses on helping people cope with "life events/stresses" and their impact(s) on a family's (whoever their family might be) health, finances and legacy... I asked myself the question "how would I balance the family budget if we had exorbitant vet bills?" Was there something like "Pet Insurance"? I thought I'd heard about it once. Sooooooooooooooooo....
On October 5, 2000 I plugged "Pet Insurance" into a search engine and scoured the web to find some. I located Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) called their customer service line and received excellent service! The representative explained the different coverages easily and I opted for "Advantage Plus", the more comprehensive plan for a little more money. I have to admit I felt "peace of mind" just knowing Luke had medical coverage.
November 9, 2000.........All I heard my fiance say was "Luke's been hit by a car...the vet told me to take him to Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston. I'm taking him there now". Our sweet little puppy was badly hurt. I ran out of my office and started driving to Angell Memorial...Oh God whatever they have to do to save him, I want them to do...that's when I remembered..."I have pet insurance". When I got to the hospital I told them that I had pet insurance but couldn't remember the name (I'm surprised I could remember my own at the time). They surmised that it was VPI and gave me the 800 number. I called them and was responded to immediately, the rep told me that I had the best coverage and gave me my member number and they even faxed the insurance form to the hospital. I have found VPI to be responsive, professional and the service they offer is "literally a life saver". Luke had three fractures in his hind legs, he required many X-rays to determine the extent of any internal injuries (luckily there were none). He had major surgery including plates, pins and anesthesia. For a little over $200 my VPI insurance is offsetting a bill that exceeds the $4,500 limit but without it we could have never afforded to give Luke the surgery he deserved.
In telling my story, I would be remiss if I didn't commend Angell Memorial Hospital and their remarkable staff in Boston, Massachusetts. The kindness of these doctors and nurses (particularly Dr. Belinda LaBarbera) has been more than I've seen in any medical facility! They kept us informed every step of the way with Luke's progress (more than I've experienced with human hospitals) Their dedication, expertise and compassion is a credit to the veterinary profession.
To sum it all up...Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI)is a practical, economical and forward thinking option that any pet owner (in my opinion)would be foolish to go without. (Isn't a family member worth protecting?)
