be prepared to wait, and be dissapointed (Reply to this comment)
by mottdog
We've had VPI for 5 months now. In the time our 10 mo. old puppy has had two visits to the vet, twice for a skin disorder and once for puppy warts totaling approx $600.00. This incl. the visit, the meds, diagnostic testing. Of the $600.00 we paid out, less the deductable, we were paid by VPI $40.00, so far. We don't know how much more we're getting back because the 2nd claim is still not processed nealy 40 days later.
Currently our dog is in hospital for a partial intestinal blockage, our bill has been estimated to be 2000.00. We brought her in last nite at midnight to a vet. hospital. According to VPI's benefit schedule, less the deductable, we'd get back approx. 300.00, if you factor in the months and months of payments we've paid into our plan, plus the many years of payments we'd cont. to pay, the cost benefit is hardly worth it.
I'm totally unimpressed with VPI. Waiting over 15 min, each time you call them, and having to spend time with a les-than cooperative operator who seems as though your call has interrupted her baby-sitting session (I heard complaining children in the background on today's call to VPI), and having to wait two months or more to get your claim check, which is miniscule, is not what I signed up for.
Buyer beware, just because a lot of vet's have the brochures for VPI on the counter , don't automatically sign on with them.
North Shore Animal League of America ( a 40 y.o. adoption institution in N.Y.) which is where we adopted our dog from, endorses Shelter Care, we are going to "interrogate" that insurance company to find out exactly what we can expect should our beloved pet need further medical attention in the future.

For a terrific review! As always you have covered EVERYTHING (with just the right amount of humor)! I have found one other thing that VPI doesn't cover.... we are planning to breed our Golden Retreiver! They consider breeding as optional (correctly so, I might add...) and so nothing is covered... I don't mind but it would be wonderful if they had a special policy to cover the expenses we are incurring! We have been to the doggie ophlamologist, doggie cardiologist and have had hip and elbows xrayed... PLUS we are having all these tests certified! AND she hasn't even gone into heat yet... once that happens (after we pay the stud fee - tough job there and he gets paid for it!) we will have ultrasounds to verify the pregnancy, and lots of puppy bills when we have them all checked out... and of course if there are any complications.... ANYWAY, I enjoyed the epinion and it is nice to know I am not alone in being pleased with VPI. Susan

Terrific information (Reply to this comment)

When I first found out about this plan, my thought was "I wish I had heard of this earlier" This is such a great concept. As the owner of three elderly dogs, I can attest to the thousands of dollars spent each year in vet bills.
Great review!

I've had my beloved cats, Becky and Violet, for 12 years now, and I'm embarrassed to say, I had never even heard of pet insurance until I read your review! Thanks for the enlightenment, pogomom. I'm going to check out the VPI website right now!

I was just looking into a policy like this last week for my 2 fuzzballs. It all sounded good on paper, but I didn't know anybody who had any consumer experience with a pet insurance.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your impeccable timing.
Sara
P.S. The fuzzballs thank you too.

Hi!
They declare on the web site and on the policy that they do not cover any congenital or hereditary illnesses. That pretty much covers what most pure-bred animals face and I agree, it is unfair. Still, in emergency situations, this coverage really comes in handy. I also find I save on Pogo's regular medications which, at 14 years of age, really does add up.
I am sorry you have had problems with this concern. I would definitely file an appeal with them or at least speak with a supervisor.
Thanks so much for your comment.

They must have changed because a friend had this insurance and they wouldn't cover just about anything that certain breeds are prone to.
I know I could not get it for my dog.
I gave you an HR because of the way you worded your review. I wish you good luck with continued pet coverage for your darling pet.
