Pros:Fast, easy, cheap.
Cons:If you use many forms, you need to know tax basics.
The Bottom Line: For $9.95, it's worth a try. If you have simple forms, I don't see how you can go wrong.

I am so thrilled about this website, i have been telling everyone I know to use it. I finished my taxes last weekend in record time, and filed it electronically for just $9.95.

I have a complicated tax situation, with a rental property, and I use Schedules A, B, and E. The Taxslayer software which I downloaded (for free!) for my PC made it all a snap. Now, you need to undertstand at the outset that I had basically done my taxes BEFORE I began using the software. I had all my main totals, and I had a rough idea of what was going everywhere. If you are completely new to taxes, and particularly, the more complicated schedules, you may find the site less helpful. I would imagine, though, that someone with simple forms, and a BASIC knowledge of IRS terms, would be thrilled by this site...you'd be done in no time, and pay just 9.95 to file electronically. (By the way, you do NOT pay each time you refile!) That rocks!!!

The main thing I loved about the site and software are so intuitive. By that I mean, when a figure is filled in one place, and when you do your taxes by hand it needs to be filled in elsewhere, this program does it for you. You scroll down, and it's already done. I found that so time-saving. The other intuitive thing I loved, was the way the necessary forms always appeared when needed. If you entered something somewhere that required the filing of another form, Taxslayer made sure you couldn't progress until that other form was done. AND, when you got to that form, the previous figures you had were already filled in!!

I love many of the site's options. For example, you can opt to print a hard copy as many times as you want. A nice neat typed copy. Also free. Then, when it comes time to file electronically, you are given several options, including getting your refund at regular pace, or getting an advance. I almost chose the advance, but found I had to open a bank account with the lending institution. I just didn't want to do that, but if you need the money fast, it's there for you. I think that option was either 29.95 or 39.85. (And that includes the electronic filing!) Oh yeah, another great option was being able to get an IRS PIN number right at their site, so i didn't even need to mail in ANYTHING to the IRS. Nothing!

Did my whole process go without a hitch? No. I had to try to file three times, and the first two times I got rejected. The "error codes" were a little too general to figure out, but after the second failure, I emailed their customer service, who were very helpful. The third try succeeded. I should note the form that failed dealt with depreciation...one of the things I find the most difficult in doing my own taxes. I got a little frustrated after the second failure, and took my completed hard copy to H&R Block...they wanted to charge me a HUNDRED dollars to mail it electronically, and the damn taxes were all DONE!!!! My jaw dropped, I turned and walked out. When I got home, I found that customer service had solved the problem with my form.

The only negative with the site, I feel, is that you get charged the 9.95 whether or not your tax form is accepted by the IRS. I feel that that cost should be reduced to maybe five dollars if it fails. (You have to give taxslayer SOMETHING for use of their software and TRYING to file it electronically.

Try it folks!! Taxslayer.com

(April 2003) This is now the third year in a row I have used Taxslayer. I love the fact that if you want it too, it selects all of the previous year's info for you. I also love how at the press of a key you can compare this year's to last year's forms.
