My husband and I joined Navy Federal while we were stationed in Mayport, FL in 1991 and have been members every since. The motto is members for life.
We have had very few problems with Navy Federal, most of them caused by us. We started our account while we were young and stupid, made some mistakes - which if we had created at a regular bank, would have taken years to recover from with the outrageous fees they charge. Navy Federal charges fees, but they aren't as large as others.
Other institutions would have completely written us off, they didn't... we are still members.
Navy Federal has been there for us in Florida, Virginia, South Carolina, Texas, overseas, and now online.
Their rates are better than most for loans, and they still believe in customer service (even over the phone!).
Once a member always a member, for why bail on then when they won' bail on you?
