I joined Navy Federal under my fiancé's policy about two years and since then I've had a love-hate relationship with them.
Love:
1. The low interest rate on the credit card. It can't get much better than that, Mastercard charges 26% interest on theirs, while our bank credit card is only 11%. It makes it easier to pay off a credit card with low interest.
2. Customer service. Not over the phone because their automated system is slow and confusing, but if you actually can take the time out of your schedule to go there and talk to one of their representatives, things can get done. Their customer service reps. are all very nice and very helpful.
3. The fact that even though I am not blood related to my fiancé, they still let me into Navy because we are engaged.
Hate:
1. The fact that there are so few ATM's for Navy around. Everytime I have to use another ATM machine (like Chevy Chase), I have to pay the $1.50 service charge. I'd use Navy's if I could find any around where I live.
2. Location. One of their main offices is located in downtown Vienna and is extremely hard to get to. I can't go during the week (I work) and that leaves only the weekend which means I have to sit in traffic to get there and then try to get through the hordes of people who can't make it during the week.
3. Their automated telephone line. We have tried over a hundred times to transfer money from my checking account over to the VISA and it never works. We can do it fine from my fiance's account, but never mine, we always end up getting transferred to a real live human.
I do like Navy, they seem more willing to help than Pentagon was and they've never put a hold on our accounts like Pentagon did once (I hit the limit on the credit card and they locked me out of my checking account). So, Navy's a good choice, but since it's primarily a D.C. bank, you'll end up paying a lot in ATM fees since it's almost impossible to find a Navy ATM.
