| bmoryan's Full Review: Navy Federal Credit Union |
My father was Navy, so my first account was with Navy Federal Credit Union. I've used a couple of traditional banks, worked for an on-line bank, and joined another credit union... but I'll stick with NFCU forever!
When I first went to college in upstate New York, I didn't like having to mail checks for deposit. NFCU is located where Navy folks can use it; I learned to adjust. Once I was out of college and had direct deposit, all my worries went away.
NFCU doesn't require a minimum balance in the checking. And if you do end up overdrawing your account, they'll automatically transfer money from your savings. I think you can have that happen 5 times a month. The minimum balance for the savings account is $5.
I don't remember the last time I actually went to a NFCU branch. There's no need. You can do everything over the phone. Most banks allow you to check balances, paid checks, and transfer money. NFCU allows you to transfer money to a VISA/MasterCard or Loan account. It's better than paying a company to ACH your money! You pick up the phone and transfer it yourself. Jot everything down in you checkbook and those bills are paid without worring about the USPS or 33 cents for each bill.
We were hesitant moving the the Sharecheck VISA card, but it's works great! We had moved away from checks to our ATM card, but I like the Sharecheck VISA because I can use it anywhere VISA's accepted!
We've just started using the on-line access and I'm very impressed. I worked for an online bank for 18 months and understand how banks work. NFCU is very tight with information. I forgot my logon and called NFCU. They confirmed my address and mailed me the information again.
They're very informative with things that are going on with my account. If I'm getting direct deposit from a new source, they send me a letter. If I've ACHed money to my mortgage company, they send me a letter. If I've added a deposit wrong, they call me to discuss the difference and send me photocopies of the checks. I've always had a positive experience with their staff.
We called to get a car loan through NFCU. The interest rate was lower than anywhere else I had seen! They approved it and sent me the check immediately. I was able to spend time haggling over the price; not trying to get a loan.
NFCU has all the features I'd ever want in a bank! Savings, checking, loans, credit cards, online access... I'm a customer for life!
