I worked for Publix briefly at the beginning of the year. While an employee, I opened an account with the Publix Employee's Federal Credit Union. I am glad that I did.

I initially opened the account because I know credit unions tend to have better rates and more relaxed policies than banks. Since opening the account, I have closed my bank account and now use the credit union exclusively.
I live in Georgia, and there is only one branch here. It is located in Norcross, which is about 15 miles northeast of Atlanta. Because Publix is based out of Florida, the credit union is as well. Even though it is not convenient to get to the branch near me, the credit union's policies allow me to do most of my business through the ATM or mail.
The credit union has a Presto machine at every Publix store. My ATM card can only be used at these machines or in the stores, but now that Publix is the second largest chain of grocery stores in the area, that is not a problem. I received my ATM card about 2 weeks after opening the account. I did have to mail in a verification of receipt, then they sent my PIN. I cannot choose a PIN-the credit union does this. There is a limit of $400 in transactions daily, but I have never needed more.
I have direct deposit, but I can also mail payments to the branch. The credit union posts deposits immediately, no matter what time of the day they receive it. The day or so in the mail would be the same time that a bank would take to make funds available, so I really don't lose any time by making my deposits this way.
The credit union is very reasonable in terms of fees. There is a $15 NSF fee, and $5 stop payment fee. They charge $2 to replace a lost ATM card, and a $2 monthly account fee. (This can be avoided with a $50 minimum balance.) ATM withdrawals cost $.50, but this fee is waived for 4 withdrawals each month with direct deposit.
Publix Employee's Federal Credit Union offers a Visa Checkcard, Money Market Accounts, Christmas Club accounts, and IRA's. They provide auto loans, but not home loans. They also have telephone and online account access.
Anytime that I have needed telephone customer service, they have always been prompt and friendly. I have needed to go into the Norcross branch three times, and have received the same great service in person as I did over the phone. The last time, I mistakenly had left my driver's license at home and arrived at the credit union needing to cash a check. The teller allowed me to make the transaction, though she required me to verify all of my personal information on the account in addition to the dates and source of my direct deposits.
To become a member, you must either work for Publix, or have a relative who works for Publix.
