Looking For Something? How About Finding Nemo

May 30, 2003
Review by
Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Everything. Yep, no kidding.

Cons:Nothing.

The Bottom Line: The best movie I've seen in 2003. You'll be sorry if you don't see it :).

I went into this movie not expecting much. Sure, it's Disney. Sure, it's Pixar. Over the past year, they've been running various trailers for Finding Nemo and it just didn't look exciting to me. I was worried that Pixar was losing their touch.

I love it when I am dead wrong :).

The Story
Marlin (Albert Brooks) is a single father, clownfish who is raising his son Nemo (Alexander Gould) in an ocean suburbia. Nemo is no ordinary clownfish. He was born with an underdeveloped fin (he calls it his "lucky" fin). That handicap, combined with the fact that his mother Coral (Elizabeth Perkins) and 399 other siblings were killed by a barracuda before he was born, leads Marlin to be super protective of his only child.

During his first day of school, Nemo finally reaches his limit with his father's overprotectiveness. It's not that he doesn't love his father, it's just that he won't let Nemo learn and grow on his own. Trying to prove a point, Nemo accidentally gets himself caught by a scuba diver. Marlin is frantic and scours the ocean, looking for his son. Blue-fish Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) tags along for the ride and together, the two follow up on the only clue they have - the scuba diver's mask.

What happens? Well gosh, you're gonna have to see the movie!

The Scoop
I told my husband tonight, that I might leave him for Andrew Stanton. Mr. Stanton is the main man behind this movie, showcasing his talent as a director, writer, and actor. I don't know why I was surprised because he's pulled off the same roles in other Pixar movies like Monsters, Inc., Toy Story, and A Bug's Life.

There is no one stand out thing/moment/person in this movie. It all stands out which is why it's a five star production.

If you pull the story apart from the acting and animation, you'll notice a lot of things. Mr. Stanton is a solid storyteller. He used themes that we could all identify with and that haven't been overused and over-cliched. On top of that, there was this HUGE layer of reality - single parent, child with a handicap, random violence, cultural differences - something that we don't usually get out of a Disney movie. Well, unless it's a cliched fairytale :).

The cool thing about the story and its themes is that Mr. Stanton didn't make any of them stand out as anything out of the ordinary. Instead of relying on the individual challenges of each character, he approached the story from a bigger picture perspective. There were times when you forgot about Nemo having a handicap or Marlin being a single parent because you were so tied into the story that Mr. Stanton was trying to share with us.

From what I've described so far, you must think that this is a heavy-handed movie. It's absolutely not and that's the brilliant thing about it! I laughed hard, many times. Like the other Pixar films, there were some great jokes that only adults would get and still, children and adults were laughing in all sorts of other places.

There are various actors that lend their voices to Finding Nemo. It probably wasn't hard for you to pick up on Albert Brooks (I love him! If anyone can play an overprotective father, it's him!). It may have been a little more difficult for you to pick out Ellen DeGeneres (but not me!).

I was concerned about the casting of Ellen DeGeneres. Most of the time, she creates that nails on a chalkboard feeling for me. It was slightly that way in the trailers which is probably why I wasn't anticipating a good movie. Here, she does a knock-up job and her chemistry with Albert Brooks is hilarious!

Little Alexander Gould had a charming voice and as Nemo, he was adorable. There are some high-pitched, male voices that get on my nerves, but definitely not Alex's.

Two of the most entertaining characters/voices were those done by Andrew Stanton (dude!) and Barry Humphries (Fish are our friends, not food).

I promise you - you'll get pretty lost in the animation, but in a good way. The way Pixar has drawn out the characters and environments, you really do feel like you're looking into the inside of the ocean. I appreciated the fact that they didn't stick to their usual, sharp colors all of the time. The ocean isn't see-through clear, ya know! There was this layer of graininess that was weaved into the animation to give it the real-ocean look.

Unlike other Disney/Pixar films, there isn't a lot here in the music department. You get one or two songs that are mostly background but nothing that stands out as a Top 40 hit.

Other things to look for: Buzz Lightyear (the toy) shows up in one scene and there are lots of references to other movies like Jaws and The Shining.

Before Finding Nemo starts up, we have the pleasure of viewing a Pixar movie-short from many years ago (before Toy Story) called, Knick Knack. It's very funny and for being as old as it is, it holds up quite well!

The End
Finding Nemo is rated "G" and should be enjoyed by the entire family - yes - even Grandma and Grandpa. Not only should you rush to the theater to see this, but you should also look to pre-order it on dvd :).
