| brandon2001's Full Review: Sega Controller for Dreamcast |
The Sega Dreamcast controller for the Japanese launch was a huge failure. Buying one was a big gamble because the buttons were weak and poorly made. Breaking the buttons was common and it seemed Sega had failed again. Luckily Sega of America fixed these problems for the America launch.
That said the Dreamcast controller is a good controller. It has 6 buttons, a start button, an analog stick and a D-pad. The 6 buttons are the A, B, X, and Y and two trigger buttons in the back. In the middle of the controller there is two slots, each can be used to hold a VMU (memory card) or a rumble pak. The setup of the controller is fairly good, But it can be annoying at times. Plainly put, I think that it all depends on the way the game developer sets the controls that decides if you like the controls.
Some problems can't be solved though. The controls on 2-D fighting games are horrible. The analog stick is worthless because it is to sensitive to pull off moves. The D-pad isn't much better because it to is also sensitive. Also the plug in cord is weak and can possible bust if you pull hard. Mine is a little disconnected and I'm getting nervous.
The analog stick is still pretty good for most games. It is easy to move, comfortable, and reacts quickly. The D-pad is normally not included in a lot of games as a source of movement. A lot of the time it is used for camera angle movement instead. The trigger buttons are perfect for first person shooters. Sometimes they get in the way if you have to use them along with other buttons constantly.
The controller overall is very comfortable to hold. I have big hands and the big controller is perfect for me. If you hate small things because they feel wrong you will probably love the feeling of it. One thing that really holds this controller back is the lack of buttons. A lot of games have had to adjust to it or change the way its setup because there are not enough buttons. Some games (namely Virtual On)have had to make an alternative controller just to make the game work.
Despite the set backs of the controller it is fairly good overall.
I would recommend that if you own a Dreamcast you have at least one.
