| My_Epinion's Full Review: Saitek DVD remote for PlayStation2 |
One of the main reasons I bought the ps2 was because of the DVD capability. It’s a shame that the console it self didn’t come with a remote or that Sony hasn’t produced one and marketed it as an accessory, but it is a game console after all. Anyway, of the three ps2 DVD remotes available I choose the Saitek because it looked very nice and appeared to have all the functions I would need to make the ps2 act just like a DVD player. The box advertises “Direct-access, function buttons are logically arranged, extremely easy to use!”. The reality is that the only functions that work are Play and Stop buttons, none of the other 14 buttons work. When you press them, the TV displays an annoying little message “Not a Valid Function”. This also renders you unable to assess all the other extras that come on DVDs these days such as the other language supports or the behind the scenes sections. As far as layout, I’m sure it was logically arranged and extremely easy to use for the designer of the remote, but as for the rest of us, we are left to try and decipher what the little pictures printed above the buttons actually do. Not that it matters because none of them work anyway. The remote itself has an infra-red receiver that you must plug into the ps2 so the remote can send signals to the game console. Saitek, knowing that when you plug the receiver in it would block the game controlled port, were generous enough to add an extra slot so that you could plug the game controller into the receiver so you wouldn’t have to switch back and forth, but sadly even this feature doesn’t work. You can control the game for maybe three minutes and then the game controller stops responding for 30 seconds and then comes back on, but in those 30 seconds you character has died because you couldn’t move. Over all this remote looks very clean and matches the ps2 perfectly but it doesn’t do all it promises. If all you want the remote to do is play and stop and you don’t mind loosing access to the extras on the DVD, the Saitek DVD Remote is your candidate. Otherwise just stick to using the game controller to watch your movies.
