adolfolucas's Full Review: Sony PlayStation® 2 Console
This is the best console I've ever played in my life. It has all that you can expect from a console, and the games are still cheap. Somehow you need to buy a separate cooler to keep the console working for long periods of time.... Multiplayer gaming. Dreamcast comes with a 56.6K modem which is high enough to play games on the internet. However, Sony says that even if the PS2 won't come with a built-in modem, you'll be able to install any type of modem to it like cable modems. Ok, now what's the point to installing a cable modem on a console? You don't need a connection higher than 56.6K to play over the internet... the PS2 is a great system with a crazy shipset and an immense amount of power, the problem is that the game companies are just releasing the same games they did for the PSONE and are just going on the good will of the words "for the Playstation 2" being written on them will help them sell millions of copies. Pretty much the point is that Sony and Sega both have no quality control; no standards that the game companies should follow. When I first looked at the specs for the systems graphics potential I was truely amazed, however I looked into them some more, and I have come to the conclusion that they aren't much more advanced than the Dreamcast's. The 75 Million polygon per second rate looked incredible until I realized that Sony is talking about flat shaded polygons with no artificial intelligence, or physics to slow it down. It's my theory that with all effects on, an advanced A.I., and a high quality physics engine the polygon count will most likely not reach over 20 million per second. Though the specs only show the Dreamcast as being able to handle 3 million polygons per second, it's advanced system of rendering only the polygons that need to be rendered allow the graphics to rival my Voodoo 3 which would place the Dreamcast at around 8 million polygons per second. The thing that bothers me the most about the Playstation 2 is that instead of rendering graphics at a resolution of 640X480 as the Dreamcast does, Sony has decided to go with a lower resolution of 640X240 stretched to fit your TV. This results in unsightly jaggies that are simply unacceptably in a 128 Bit System. Sega's GD-Rom was an excellent innovation on the standard CD-Rom, however I believe that Sony is smart to take it to the next level with DVD. The only real advantage to GD-Rom over DVD is that it is more difficult to pirate Dreamcast games, thus allowing Sega to keep prices slightly lower. And since I'm not a millionaire, I'll trust in the PS2 to give me some honest value for money (!) when it comes out, by which time my horribly expensive PC will be junk and every millionaire gamer who can afford to buy new PC's like others buy toilet paper will laugh at it. Anyway, even if the PC's of August 2000 will equal or exceed the performance of the PS2, they sure as hell won't beat the price now will they? Even if the PS2 is sickeningly overhyped, I still consider it a worthy product.
