Cons: Very buggy; awkward handling/ floaty feel; too easy to land tricks; terrible controls
The Bottom Line: This game is sloppy at best. Everything is so unnatural. Avoid at all costs. Go play Tony Hawk some more, or get a copy of Matt Hoffman.
SolidSnake316's Full Review: Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX for PlayStation 1
Can someone please tell me how someone could take a game, add in more of everything, yet still make a game much worse than what came before it? Well, that's what has happened here in Dave Mirra Maximum Remix. This game is so buggy and some of the challenges are so frustrating (due to terribly unresponsive controls) that this game is only good for a one-day rental, if even that. Allow me to me elaborate:
The original game was fairly good, and very addictive, even if it was only a Tony Hawk BMX clone. The Skeletal Dynamics System, where your biker crashes differently every time, was very nifty, if a bit buggy. Completing the challenges was good fun, and I always felt compelled to keep playing. It was good fun, but I never bought it; I only rented it. Then I decided to rent Maximum Remix thinking "It must be better," but I was wrong.
The controls in this game are terrible. It tries to emulate Tony Hawk, but the lame control, used from the Thrasher engine, is very awkward compared to Tony Hawk's control. I've tried to do a wall ride about fifty times, and couldn't do it. The tricks are fine, but I've actually landed on my head, and magically finished a backflip. Just like last time, you look like you're flying in slow motion, and you can land almost sideways, and you won't fall. Unlike the last game however, these little annoyances are inconsistent, just like the controls. It's so annoying!
The graphics are seriously lacking, and look just like the ones from the last game. The sounds are fine, with some good music, but the music is this game's only good point.
Lastly, the thing that kills this game is the amount of stupid bugs that happen. I've been caught on an edge so that my bike was vertical, and I've been able to skid in a circle for four hundred feet. I really only played the first three levels, but I can tell you that this game is a total waste of time. Get the original, or better yet, Matt Hoffman.
