Game_Stregano's Full Review: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for Dreamcast
This is one of the many adventure games that I really enjoyed. It uses the same engine as Tomb Raider, but that is expected seeing as the game is made by the same company that made Tomb Raider. A good example of this is WCW/NWO Revenge and WWF Wrestlemania 2000. These are entirely different wrestling leagues, yet the THQ used the same game engine.
Enough about the engine, lets get to the game itself. The graphics on this game are far superior to its Playstation counterpart. The environments hurt my eyes just looking at them not because they were horrible, but because they were incredible.
Even the CGI sequence at the beginning of the game blew my mind because the graphics were so good. The controls were good. The only problem I had with them that it was sometimes hard to tell where you were going if the camera angle switched.
The gameplay was awesome. From start to finish I was at the edge of my seat like a good movie. The best thing about this gameplay was the exploration. The more you explore, the funner it gets. There were many different glyphs and talents to find to make the game funner and some were a necessity to find.
A good example of that was a certain part of the game where I was jumping across small platforms and the only way to get to the last one was to shoot it with a projectile. The bosses were very easy if as long as you know the strategy behind beating them.
The sound was excellent. I always thought that a good game soundtrack always puts the game right in motion. I couldn't play Crazy Taxi to country music. That's just not the right game for that music. This music made a small factor a suspense that kept me thinking "Will there be a killer evil mutant vampire around this corner ready to jump right out and kill me?".
This game might not appeal to some because of the puzzles. Most of the puzzles in this game were simply just pushing the right block into the right slot on the wall to unlock a door. Other times you might have to turn a crank and do something in paricular like hit a switch before the crank stops turning. The hardest puzzle for me to do was one where you had to hit one bell and hurry up and run to the other bell before the first bell stopped ringing.
The only problem that I had with this game was when it was time to save. When the game is saved, you have to start at the very beginning instead of the exact place where you saved. Granted, this might not be so bad if you save every time you get to a warp gat so that you can just warp to where you left off, but what if you can't make it to a warp gate or can't find it. I got about halfway to the stone glyph not making it to the warp gate, and when I saved I had to start at the beginning and run through all the things that I had gone through before.
Other than when you save, this was one of the best adventure games that I've ever played. This game had everything that makes a great adventure game and I hope that the sequel will to.
