ndnmofo21's Full Review: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver for Dreamcast
Soul Reaver, the name says it all. This game is great!, I must say I just got this game and I have not beat it yet, but I am nothing but impressed. It has great things from the start to the finish.
Well, the controls do take some getting use to, as with any good game. It is fairly easy, the d-pad controls the camera view to the entire 3D environment. The analog stick maneuvers you around while all the other buttons do various tasks, from jumping, crawling, scaling walls, swimming, and other things. Don't think it's so easy people, you have to earn those skills!
The graphics are smooth and beautiful. The FMV sequences are superb. The entire game runs smoothly, and there are very few flaws. A couple of times you might notice the screen a little jagged but it rarely happens. The graphics are nice bonus.
You cannot die in this game, you are only sent back to the starting point. There aren't really levels, but everything has to go in sequence. It's like a whole world but you can only explore certain places with the abilities you have. As the game goes on you earn different abilities to go to different places.
This game is very difficult. I almost had to resort to a strategy guide. Even me, who hates strategy guides, but this game is very hard. You just lose your place and don't know where to go next. The bosses seem very easy but there are special ways to beat them.
In the game, there is a material and spectral plane. It seems very confusing when you first play but after a while you get the hang of it. The material plane is the real world, where time exists and you can do normal things like open doors and stuff like that. The spectral plane is where nothing is happening, time does not exist. You can switch through planes very easily.
The game also has the unique gateways. The time warps enable you to get to different places that you have already been to. You can only go to a gateway that you have discovered previously. This way you don't have to go through the whole game to get to where you were.
You can save in this game at any point you wish. But no matter wherever you save or where you end the game you always start at the starting point. It's the same place if you get sent back because you got killed.
Overall, the game concept seems very hard to pick up but once you get a hold of it, you can't let it go. The game is great from start to finish. Well, I really shouldn't say to finish because I'm not quite there yet.
