mojobobo's Full Review: Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes for Dream...
Okay, let me bring this up right away: I am a Street Fighter Fanatic. It started when I pumped in hundreds of dollars into the local Street Fighter II back in 7th grade and it hasn't gotten much better since. I love the control, the insane moves, and the highly entertaining animation. Marvel vs. Capcom takes everything from the original Street Fighter series and pumps it with more steroids than an Olympic power lifting team (oh yes, that's a GOOD thing!)
For those of you who don't know, Marvel vs. Capcom is a "sequel" to Marvel vs. Street Fighter, which was a "sequel" to X-Men vs Street Fighter. These games appeal to those of us who have always thought, "Wouldn't it be cool to see Ryu take on Wolverine and the incredible Hulk at the same time?" If you have never spent sleepless nights pondering these sort of questions, you're psychologically healthier than I am. :)
You can choose two fully playable characters to be on your team as well as a third that serves as an assistant. During the fight you can swap your two characters in and out and even have them team up for dual, simultaneous attacks on your opponent. During these attacks is where the Dreamcast really shines with its 2D processing capabilities. There is never any slowdown and I have yet to witness any flicker. The Dreamcast is a 2D juggernaut.
The biggest gripe I have with this game is not so much a problem with the game itself as it is with the Dreamcast controller. While it's not awful per se, it is NOWHERE near as comfortable as the Sega Saturn's controller (or even the Playstation's). Pulling off moves can be difficult on it, but it can be done with practice. If you're a serious Capcom junkie, you know you need to buy a new joypad/arcade stick anyway to get the most out of your games.
Also, it's worth mentioning that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is in the works for the Dreamcast and is supposed to be out relatively soon (check dreamcast.ign.com for details). For those of you strapped for cash, you may want to just hold off for a little while and buy the latest edition upon its arrival.
The Bottom Line is that if you enjoyed Marvel vs. Capcom in the arcades, you're going to love it at home.
