| chanele21's Full Review: Resident Evil Code Veronica for Dreamcast |
Well I finally managed to beat this game and what a ride! Wondering about the cross dressing statement in the title? Well if you haven't played RESIDENT EVIL : CODE VERONICA yet, then I guess that could be a little confusing. ( and no it doesn't mean that I was cross dressing while I played it ) :-)
CODE VERONICA is the latest installment of the RESIDENT EVIL series and by far in my books, the best! ( not like I have written any books on the subject but I guess this would be a start )
The RESIDENT EVIL series has come a long way since the first release. As much as I loved playing the first one, for any of you who have played it, know that the dialog in the game ranked high in the cheese factor. It was terrible and made me laugh so hard to hear them talk to each other. They sounded like actors reading off cue cards from a bad rated B movie.
I had played all of the games in the series, including the ever so dreaded RESIDENT EVIL: SURVIVOR, in which I chose to lay to rest permanently due to the fact it seemed like it was thrown together as fast as possible with pixilated graphics, bad dialog, and no save spots! Well after a taste of that, I was leary about having the desire to play CODE VERONICA.
We recently purchased a DREAMCAST because of the release of SEAMAN. I was so impressed with the graphics of the DREAMCAST and the feel of it, I decided to go against my fear of disappointment, and rented CODE VERONICA. I am so grateful I made that decision, because to me, this was the best installment of the series to date. Not only were the dialog and graphics great, but the story line captivated my attention.
The RESIDENT EVIL series begins with the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team called into Raccoon Forest to investigate reports of missing people, creatures, and strange sightings. During their investigation in the fields, the Bravo Team helicopter takes a fall and contact is lost with the other members of the team. They are now on their own when suddenly attacked by something they have never seen before. They run and run until they come across an old mansion which they use enter for safety. This is where the fun begins as you find yourself attacked and hunted by zombies, abnormal animals, spiders, etc.
A corporation by the name of UMBRELLA had used this mansion to hide their secret biological laboratory where they had created the T-VIRUS, a biological weapon that would turn anyone or anything into horrible, unspeakable monsters.
The only 2 survivors of this nightmare are CHRIS REDFIELD and JILL VALENTINE.
Through the RE series, more of the secrets of the Umbrella Corporation begin to unfold along with stronger and improved versions of the T-Virus are discovered, including the G-Virus.
CODE VERONICA picks up 3 months later where RE 2 left off. You begin as Clair Redfield. Claire is the sister of Chris Redfield, whom you will meet in RE 2, went to Raccoon City to find her brother. What she found was more than she was ready for. She barely escaped that nightmare and now returns in this installment to continue the search for her brother. Her journey begins in Europe and what a journey it is.
Be prepared in this game to jump out of your seats at times during game play, to become different characters with no warning, and to discover the heritage of a place that will be very familiar to any who have played the first in the series.
They did a great job at bringing back some old memories for us RE gamers and added a whole lot more. I do not want to let the whole story out of the bag. It would be like ruining the plot to a great movie, ( in which my friends have a lot of experience at ).
Warning
I am going to cheat a bit here and give you gamers some helpful advise.
As i mentioned earlier, you will be trading off characters in this game. Be very aware of the weapons and ammo you keep in your chest. You will find later in the game, that when you have changed characters, ( not by your choice )that there will be certain situations where the new character may need a certain weapon you obtained earlier in the game. Try to keep these in your chest and do not carry alot of weapons on you.
Trust me on this issue. You will find that this advise will come in very handy when the time is right and may save you from having to go to an earlier game save and repeat everything you did, just to make sure your knew character has access to the weapons in question.
BATTLE MODE
This is the extra levels rewarded to the player at the end of the game. You must finish, to my knowledge, with and A or B rating in order to get to play these levels. ( as far as I know, I could be wrong but I finished with a B rating )
In Battle Mode, you may start off by choosing, one of 3 characters. Under each character you will see your options for the kind of weapons that each character plays with. You have your choice of Claire, Chris, or Steve.
Steve is a new character that has been introduced to us through this new installment of the series. I'm not quite sure what his total story is altogether, but I do know that he and his father were captured in this story. You don't really get to know too much about him but I'm sure the air will be cleared in the next game.
Once you have chosen your character, the battle begins. You have your choice to play in 3rd person or first. My personal favorite is 1st person.
You have a set amount of time to make it through various familiar scenes in the game with unlimited ammo, to make it to the assigned boss for the character you choose to play. You will be up against the same bosses as you played in the game so be prepared because you don't have weapon upgrades as you did during the game.
By playing all 3 characters and beating all 3 characters you will unlock others as well. It's a fun little reward and great for all the shoot em up fans!
Now, if they could take the way they did this part of the game and made Survivor with the same care, it would have been much more successful. As far as I'm concerned, Survivor has been laid to rest.
I usually like to be more in depth when it comes to explaining a storyline in games, but from personal experience with this game, it will be more exciting to watch it unfold before your eyes.
Thanks for stopping by and please leave me a comment and let me know what your experiences are with this game if you have played it.
Till next time, take care.
