awoolcott's Full Review: Resident Evil Code Veronica for Dreamcast
Wow. That is all I can say to describe this game. Resident Evil - Code Veronica is the absolute best reason to buy a Dreamcast. If you are waiting for PlayStation 2, and won't get a DC, man oh man you are missing out on the best gaming experience so far this year.
The story revolves of course, Umbrella and the crazy experiments they conduct, and the hell on Earth results. This time, the lead is Claire Redfield, from Resident Evil 2, with Chris Redfield (RE1) as the co-star. There is also a main character, Steve, who has a very striking (and annoying) resemblance to Leo DiCaprio. But unlike the first 3 Resident Evil's, it is not set in Raccoon City, but on an Island somewhere, then leading to Europe. I won't go into much more about the story because it would spoil it, but it is a lot better story than Resident Evil Nemesis.
Graphically, it is just beautiful. Fully 3D instead of static 2D backgrounds, with amazing detail, is just wonderful. Each and every area in this game have their own special little touches, like rain effects and fog in the dark, to just flat out spooky lighting in a lot of places. Each character is also superbly detailed, with moving eyes and all. If you want eye candy, this will do it for you.
Soundwise, also perfect. The freaky music and creaky doors are enough to give you plenty of chills. The footsteps of zombies, shuffling and moaning of them, just great. And even the guns each have their specific sound of shots.
The control is good as well, but a little bit different on DC than PlayStation. The action and run buttons seem reversed in this game. Now that is okay with me, but it just takes a bit of time to get used to. Outside of that the control is solid, and the 180 spin (also in RE3) is a necessary addition.
The puzzles are the usual deal, with a few differences, as well as a few other differences involving security boxes. You will just have to see for yourself. And unlike RE3, there is a balance between action and puzzles, where Nemesis was more action and less puzzles.
Overall, if you have a Dreamcast, get this game NOW! If you are a Resident Evil fan who doesn't have a DC, get that too. This is one of those rare "can't miss" epic-style game that everyone should have.
