Pros: Quite amusing, top-notch voice acting, environments look great on VGA
Cons: environments are 2D static, limited evironmental interaction, point&click
The Bottom Line: Pick it up for under $12 new. Entertaining and humorous the whole way through. Relatively short with no replay value. It's all Point and Click.
mcsstokes's Full Review: Stupid Invaders for Dreamcast
I picked this game up new in April 2002 for $9.99 at an electronics store. Say what you will about the Dreamcast being a dead system that was doomed from the start and yada, yada, yada - but how can you argue about a system with an above average library of games at rock bottom prices?
Having said that, Stupid Invaders is a PC game that was ported over to the Dreamcast. I wanted to get it in the past but never did based upon its mixed reviews. Now that I have it, I'll share my thoughts on it.
Premise
Five very stupid aliens have crash landed on Earth. They hole up in an abandoned house while attempting to fix their spaceship. Things don't go so well and they end up spending more time then they planned on Earth. Meanwhile, an evil scientist (why must he be evil? he just wants to advance science) has paid a professional alien hunter to track them down and return them to him for study. Your job is to help them get off the planet before they end up on Fox's Alien Autopsy.
GamePlay
Point and Click all the way. There's a mouse pointer that is your method of interface with the game environment. You can control it just fine with a standard controller or opt for the Dreamcast mouse. My suggestion is to save the $$ and just use the controller. The game plays not unlike Myst or Riven in that you must click on various items in 2D static background and incorporate what you find to solve puzzles that advance the plot line.
You will take control of one Stupid Invade at a time as the game progresses.
Graphics
Very cartoonish with vibrant colors. All the backgrounds are 2D static. The aliens blend is seamlessly, however. There's nothing groundbreaking for the Dreamcast system but they still look very nice.
There are also lots of Full Motion Videos (FMVs). These are very well done and the transition from gameplay to FMV is absolutely seamless.
Sound / Voice Acting
The voice acting is top notch. The verbal interaction of the characters is a big part of the game and the designers were wise to get talented actors to do the voices. This is one of the biggest stroing points of the game.
Background sounds are realistic and appropriate but nothing mind shattering. Background music is passable.
Humor
This is the second of the two biggest strong points in the game. A lot of the humor is potty humor with some sexual inuendo, however there are some clever lines and animations as well. A good example is an interaction with a surly stork. After the stork tires of your presence, he tells you off via a FMV where he communicates that you should "...haul your Jehova's Witnesses As* outta here!" Perhaps not funny in and of itself, but amusing coming from a P.O.'d stork.
Puzzles
Some are easy and some are tricky. Some feel disjointed and are not intuitive. A lot of the puzzle solving involves trial and error item combination and clicking on anything that looks like it may work. Here the game gets a bit weak, it's not like Riven where the puzzles are interwoven with the plot. But, this game wasn't meant to be a mental workout bur rather an amusing diversion.
Summary
This game wasn't worth the high price of admission when it was first released on the Dreamcast. At $9.99 however, it's worth checking out. There is zero replay value to the game, once you've solved the puzzles and have heard the jokes, there's little sense in doing it again. I put it on the B list of games available for Dreamcast
