dkreskai's Full Review: Virtua Tennis for Dreamcast
I can still remember the days of pong. One or two players back and forth, not much entertainment, but it kept you busy. Then there was Atari tennis with players with arms, legs and a tennis racket. That played well and looked liked stick tennis. Then there was Virtua Tennis and now it looks and feels like a real tennis match.
I've never been a Tennis fan, but this game is awesome. You can play 1 to 4 players. Either play singles or doubles in arcade, exhibition or World Circuit mode. Choose from seven players and six courts. You can play four player doubles match or add computer players in singles play or to fill in for a doubles match.
Arcade mode is a win and advance, exhibition mode lets you play individual courts allowing you to change match options. World Circuit mode is a one player mode. You compete in tournaments, train and go shopping all over the world.
Game play is easy to learn. The A/B/X button is for serving. The A button also hits the ball and the B/X button will lob the ball. The D-Pad/Analog Thumb Pad moves your player. That is all it takes to play the game. Your movement to the ball and the position of the ball to your player will determine where you hit it and how hard you hit it. Your player will dive for the ball when he needs to just like real tennis.
Exhibition mode is a great way to work on your tennis skills. You can select the game count to win the match. Select if you want Deuce on or off. With Deuce off the first person to win a point will be the winner if the score is 40-40. You can also change the strength of the computer to easy, normal, hard or very hard. Easy is reals easy to beat, but normal can be hard to beat for a new player. You can also change the tennis wear of your player.
World Circuit lets you take part in tournaments around the world and earn prize money. You can use your money to buy things at the shop. You can buy a player to play in arcade or exhibition mode. Buy a stage for exhibition mode. Buy tennis wear or a partner for World Circuit. Replace your racket strings and buy a nutritious drink.
The training mode lets you work on your skills in a variety of modes.
1. Cannon Ball - Hit all the balls using yellow balls.
2. Smash Box - Knock the boxes off the court.
3. Drum Shooter - Lob a ball into every drum.
4. Pin Crasher - Knock over pins like bowling.
5. Bull's Eye - Aim for the target using the balls.
6. Return Ace - Return serves to hit all the targets.
7. Big Wall - Hit the balls to turn over all the panels.
8. Giant Ball - Use strong shots to push the giant rolling balls beyond the baseline.
The training is a great fun for testing your skills.
This game looks so good that the cut screens after a point look like you are watching a real tennis match. A word of warning, you tend to argue with your partner in a doubles tournament over who missed a return. After a couple hours of Virtua Tennis you may start appreciating real tennis.
