Badboy245's Full Review: Virtua Tennis for Dreamcast
Over the course of the last year or so I've gotten my hands on many titles from SEGA's sports developers. NFL2K revolutionized the way football was played on a console system. While NBA2K also worked it's magic with its solid gameplay and good graphics. But my sports collection felt like it was lacking in that it never seriously had a tennis game that could satisfy my needs. Sure, I had plenty of other titles that feed my craving for sports. But I longed for that one game that would make it feel complete. Well Virtua Tennis did just that!
I hadn't really heard much about this game so I was surprised when I heard about its release. I was excited at the fact that finally maybe someone had released a decent tennis game. SEGA obviously put many hours of hard work into this title because it is absolutely amazing. I became quite addicted to this game in a short period of time. It was utterly impossible for me to turn it off because the game just sucked you in with its graphical wonder. I had never experienced a tennis game of this calibur. No design team had ever put this much effort into a tennis game before.
The gameplay in this game is one of the high points. When you start out in arcade or career mode you can't help but laugh at the ignorance of the computer. But as the game goes on each match gets progressively harder and you find yourself struggling to even win a game let alone a set or the match. That in turn is what makes the game so great. The games no fun if you can master it in 20 minutes! Everyone wants a good challenge and Virtua Tennis delivers.
Another extraordinary part of this game is the graphics. Ever little thing is detailed and well constructed. After hours and hours of playing I found no flaws in the games graphics. Which is actually pretty incredible to be honest with you. Because normally in every superb game you’re always bound to find a graphical miscue, however small it may be, but they’re always there. That’s not the case with Virtua Tennis. I was in awe of its beauty and frankly still am at this point.
Sadly, no matter how good a game is there’s always bound to be some sort of goof up or mistake by the designers. The only one that I seriously noticed in Virtua Tennis was its lack of recognizable tennis players. Sure I’ve heard of Jim Courier, but that’s the only guy who I actually had heard of. Sure I’ll admit I’m no big tennis fan of any kind but everyone’s heard of Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi. Yet they’re names are not present on the player select menu. Shame on you SEGA! How can they make such a well-constructed game and leave out something that recognizable! It makes no sense to me!
As much as it hurt me to write that last paragraph I did. Sorry SEGA but I just can't accept the fact that you left out well-known tennis players! Other then that Virtua Tennis is the most all around tennis game I've ever played in my console gaming career. It has solid gameplay, beautiful graphics, and a very lengthy career mode. I would recommend this game to anyone in heartbeat! Your Dreamcast collection is not complete unless you own Virtua Tennis.
