Bladeguy's Full Review: WWF Royal Rumble for Dreamcast
Had THQ and Jakks taken a little more time to add match options and slightly better control this game could very well be another top ranked Dreamcast title. This is the second WWF licensed game on Dreamcast. The first was WWF Attitude, which ought to be taken to a shed and beaten. This game is no where near as bad but it leaves gamers with a feeling of "if only they had...".
The graphics in the game are nice with the Rock, Stone Cold and even The Hardy Boys texture-mapped to mimic there real life counterparts. Each wrestler has their own signature moves from Rock's Smackdown to HHH's entrance on the ring apron.
The sound is tight as punches, kicks, and special moves erupt from the television speakers. My only complaint is that each wrestler's theme music is shortened.
The gameplay in the game is good but not great. When turning to an opponent to counterattack or calling in your partner the game seems to slip. Most moves can be pulled off but sometimes characters can slide off of each other, while you press buttons, and often cause you many losses. This is really minor and can be adjusted to.
My real hope is that there are codes in the game for more levels, characters, match modes, and create-a-character. Royal Rumble and Exhibition modes fortell that the game can get boring rather quickly. Exhibition is fun but the idea of a six man tag, tag team, or even a casket match would be much more fun. And the Royal Rumble mode is just repetitive. Wrestlers are recycled into the ring until there is winner. Not that the free for all with up to nine wrestlers is not cool but to have to version of Tazz in the ring is just silly. I pray for character codes.
I have not played multi-player mode as of yet but I can imagine based on the feel and arcade look of the game it might work really well.
