friezaace's Full Review: WWF Royal Rumble for Dreamcast
The graphics of WWF Royal Rumble are ok, but they are pretty bland compared to most of the other current offerings on the
Royal Rumble. The intro to the game and some of the FMV sequences are pretty damn impressive, but other than that,
there's really not too much too gawk at. And though theme music for the WWF is very cool on the television show, this game
chooses to only use 10-second clips of the characters music and then cut it off! Lame. And the sound effects such as slams,
grunts, etc really fail to impress. Compared to other games that are out there, this title offers very meager sounds and visuals.
And sound and visuals is certainly not the only area in the game that is disappointing. Compared to the huge rosters offered in
other wrestling games, this game offers only 20 characters. Though the game features all the current superstars of the WWF,
such as the Rock, Steve Austin, Y2J, Triple H, and Kane some of the other choices for characters are pretty poorly thought
out. And worse still, your character selection really doesn't matter a whole hell of a lot, because besides maybe one or two
different moves and different esthetics, every character is essentially the same! This makes things very repetitive, since no
matter who you choose, and who your opponent is, it really won't have a great deal of effect on the game.
And to make things even more repetitive, each character has only one punch and one kick! And the minimal amount of
suplexes and holds don't do very much damage, so usually you're forced to resort to your one punch and one kick, which
makes the action in the game lose its pizzazz after a very short time. Another very annoying part of the gameplay is that you
often end up facing the wrong direction from your opponent, and you have to push your rotate button frantically to get back
track while your being pounded on. Why couldn't they have just made a button that automatically made you face your
opponent?!
Other than standard mode, the modes of play are limited to 10 man elimination and Royal Rumble, and neither of these
modes are very much fun, mainly because you keep fighting the same characters over and over again with the games very limi
ted fighting system. Sadly, the developers of this title really didn't do a whole lot of things right. This game is a real
disappointment if I ever did see one.
Overall, I would really advise you to stay away from this game. Even hardcore fans would probably be disappointed with this
title, because it is so bogged down with problems and inadequacies. There are so many other wrestling games that are much
better, so I would recommend you avoiding this game and check out one of the other, better wrestling titles. You'll be much
better off for it.
