crazypupe's Full Review: Harvest Moon for Game Boy Color
I will admit that the idea of playing a young farmer sounded a bit odd to me. But, at the recommendation of the brutally honest store employee, I bought this game.
Before I even popped the cartridge in, I sat down and read the instruction booklet. I was overwhelmed and a bit unsure about the game. There seemed to be too much to do and remember.
After reading the instructions one more time I decided to jump in and give it a try. Boy, was I surprised! The gameplay is pretty easy to pick up and I was farming and harvesting my first plants in no time!
It takes some time to build up your farm and start making big money. But, there is plenty to do in the meantime. You have to plant, water, and harvest you crops. You have to remember to get the crops into the pick-up boxes on time so you get paid for them. You can visit the Harvest Sprites, go to Church, go into town for supplies, and much more!
At the start of the game you are given the choice of being a boy or a girl (I say "boy" and "girl" because that's what they are.. children!) and you choose a dog or a cat as your pet. You don't really "take care" of your pet. But they are nice to have around! (HINT: Put the dog out at night to protect your farm.)
After you start doing better you are able to buy cows and chickens to raise and maintain. They provide eggs and milk which can be sold for more money. The eggs can also be incubated and hatched to produce more chickens!
There are many events that occur to keep the game moving. Typhoons, Christmas Parties, Vegetable Festivals, Earthquakes, etc.. Each event creates new situations to deal with.
Over all, Harvest Moon GB is a great game! I am only giving 4 stars for one simple reason. The relationship aspect was not included. Harvest Moon 64 on the Nintendo64 adds the element of finding a life partner to the challenge of maintaining your farm. This is a nice feature that I miss in the GameBoy version.
Does that one missing element make the game unenjoyable? No! It is still loads of fun and quite a challenge! I still highly recommend this game, especially to anybody who is tired of fighting, killing, hunting, or destroying everything!
