onetuffcowboy's Full Review: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 for Game Boy Advance (GBA...
Like it or not (and I dont), Tony Hawks Pro Skater is one of todays most popular videogames. I never got into the games, though, due to their steep learning curve and the fact that I couldnt get much replay value out of them. But I decided to go ahead and give the GBA version of THPS2 a try and I must say that while Im still not on the bandwagon, Im willing to concede that this is a pretty good game.
Graphically, THPS2 pales in comparison to its home console brethren, but that was to be expected. Its still a very nice looking game, full of color and amazingly smooth animation. In fact, this is a direct port of the PS and DC versions (the characters are even polygonal); the only difference here is the perspective; the GBA version plays at a slightly isometric view, which actually works. Sound is nothing spectacular, but it works well.
In terms of gameplay, this plays better than I expected it to. The controls are fairly executed and the learning curve is nowhere near as steep as it once was. In fact, within fifteen minutes I was performing tricks and stunts; it would take me almost five times as long to reach that point on the home originals. The game still isnt perfect; novices will struggle early and often, and replay value is still kinda lacking, but this is a step in the right direction for the series.
Tony Hawks Pro Skater still wont win any awards with me, but the GBA version of THPS2 is by far the best Tony Hawk game Ive ever played. The playability, while still not at the level Id like it to be, has vastly improved, and the translation from the home consoles to the portable has gone off without a hitch. Fans will love it, and newcomers might find something to like here as well.
