kiersten's Full Review: Alpha Centauri for Windows
As a dedicated Civilization fan, I was understandably confused earlier this year when both Civilization: Call to Power and Alpha Centauri claimed to be the sequels to Civilization 2. Civ2 had been such a brilliant improvement over Civilization that I was waiting with baited breath. The reviews said that Alpha Centauri (from Civilization's creator, the Sid Meier of the title) was the true heir, so I bought it.
And was profoundly disappointed. The programmers have changed the story line to one of space colonization, but they haven't made any real improvements to either game play or the interface. New graphics aren't really an appeal in this format, especially since the turn-based, jerky game play is starting to seem quite dated. Moreover, the game loses something when it's removed from its historical context--it's much more interesting to fight groups of historical significance than entities I can't even remember the names of.
My expectations for this game may have been too high. Friends who've played it (who aren't Civilization addicts) have found it fascinating. But it just didn't catch my interest.
