JulieLMatthews's Full Review: The Best of Entertainment Pack for Game Boy Color
When I told my husband I was doing an opinion on this game, he brought my sanity into question just as I have his lately. His words were, “Honey, people either like Microsoft stuff or they utterly hate it. There’s the opinion.” Okay, so maybe he’s right but questioning my gaming obsessions isn’t wise considering he’s moved to Simsville lately.
This game is surprisingly good. It is surprisingly fun. I don’t particularly play Tic-Tac-Tics, Ski Free (something about hitting trees isn’t thrilling to me), Life Genesis, or Minesweeper. What does that leave, you ask? Well, not much except Solitaire games. But they are fun Solitaire games. You can actually win them, which is more than you can do with other games. Not that it’s easy but when you incorporate a strategy, you stand a chance of winning. That’s a lot better than hoping the game wasn’t programmed by Hal the computer, then finding out he was the designer.
You’ve got three Solitaire games: Tut’s Tomb, Tri Peaks and Free Cell. I’ve found out Tri Peaks is my forte. For people who haven’t played these games (now, come on, there’s a few) here’s a brief run-down on how to play. In Tri Peaks, you clear cards from the three peaks (the cards form three peaks) to earn money. I won’t go into the embarrassment of revealing my all-time low. Tut’s Tomb the object is scoring points by pairing cards adding up to 13. And Free Cell is for geniuses, thank you very much. Not really, but there is a heavier strategy involved with it. All cards are laid out face up in eight rows. You remove cards just like a regular Solitaire game, alternating suits and in order of rank. Sounds so easy but it isn’t for me. But trying is the compulsive part of this whole insidiously great game. It’s great for trips and lags at the airport and when you visit those relatives you rarely speak of and don’t even remember.
The other games included are Tic-Tac-Tics which is another Hal creation (I just know it) where you have a three dimensional variation on Tic-Tac-Toe. I’m glad other people enjoy it. I can’t play it well probably because I’d rather be playing Solitaire.
Ski Free is where you ski downhill performing tricks (no, not hitting trees like I do) and jumps and, of course, trying avoid becoming a statistic. Cursing doesn’t count and doesn’t raise your total point count either.
Life Genesis is based on Life simulation where you develop an always changing life form. It’s interesting but haven’t played that much.
Minesweeper – obviously you try not to annihilate yourself on a mine. They are scattered throughout the field of play and you try to detect them without doing yourself in and selecting the wrong square. I’ve wracked up a lot of tombstones in this game.
