Pros: Good graphics, original concept, check out "melting flame thrower guy," multi-player section received as much attention as the single-player section for once
Cons: Controls stink, hard to find some enemies because of the cruddy controls, despite the originality it's still a first-person shooter

| Clarence034's Full Review: Army Men Sarge's Heroes for Nintendo 64 |
This is one of the most incredible concepts for a game I have ever seen. Taking those plastic army men that I found to be so boring as a kid, and breathing some life into them was an explosively creative idea. I'm hoping for more to come from the "Army Men" programmers in the future.
The only thing giving this game any real originality, though, is the plastic army man angle. The rest of the game covers the same ground any other first person shooter does-make your way through the levels and kill the enemy. The weapons in this game are pretty tame fare, all things that have been seen in other game of this nature. The only two worth mentioning are the flame thrower, which melts your enemies (or you, if you're on the receiving end) into a smoldering glob of plastic, and the grenade. Unlike most games I've played, you can bounce the grenade off walls and boxes before it blows, instead of it exploding against whatever it hits first.
One of the few things I hated about this game was it's control configuration. The incredible multi-button control stick of the 64 has been put to much better, and more easily controlled, use in games like Turok and Duke Nukem, which allowed for greater use of the 3D experience by letting the player look around and move, to a certain degree, independently. Sarge, though, only looks in the direction he's moving in (unless you're aiming with one of the weapons), and moving forwards and sideways at the same time is completely impossible in the game, making strafing runs a pain in the groin.
This inability to look around is also a big pain even when you're not moving. Many have been the times playing this game when I couldn't find the character who was trying to kill me and ended up dead. This especially hold true in one of the final levels (the bathroom where you're climbing the sink). I'm constantly taken apart by a hidden sniper, and I can't, for the life of me, find the plastic sadist to kill him so I can finish the level.
Another control problem I have with this game is that the "A" button, which controls jumping, doesn't respond exactly when it's pushed. This leads to problems with timing and jumping that I've never had with a game on this console.
The multi-player section of this game is a butt-load of fun. You have more stuff to hide behind, climb over, and bounce grenades off of (depending on the multi-player level you choose) than in any game with this option I have ever played on the 64. If it wouldn't be for the controls, the multi-player would truly rock. Another thing I really love about the multi-player on this game is that the graphics are just as good as the single-player section of the cart. I can't say that for Turok 2, which, in my mind, is the standards setter for N64 first person shooters.
If you're looking for a good way to kill some time, this game isn't bad, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
