Pros: Great Idea, A lighter side of War Games. A game a parent could buy for kids.
Cons: Control tricky, viewpoint limited. Graphics a little behind technology.

| dwallent's Full Review: Army Men Sarge's Heroes for Nintendo 64 |
Sarge's Heroes is a great concept. I have played a few shooter games, most notably Goldeneye 007. While 007 had the advantage of being a great action game, with fairly intelligent enemies and infinite variability, there were two things lacking: It was not very "explorable" (you never felt like you could just run around looking for stuff) and it was VERY violent - and too realistic. Army Men - Sarge's Heroes has the advantage of being a game that acts like a GAME. At every turn there are funny things to remind you that these little guys are made of plastic. The electric fences are powered through a surge protector like I plug my PC into. The forts are like those I used to play with as a kid. The garden and bathroom levels really take me back to playing with my little GI Joe action figures, and the icing is the little round spot on the backs of all the guys that is left over from the molding process. We used to file those circles off our men, one by one, and this was not missed by the game designers. I am not a parent, yet, but As one of the older players of V-games, I am concerned about the violence in many of the most popular games. My hat is off to 3D0 for their effort at a shoot-em-up game that leaves you with a warm, fuzzy feeling right after nuking a squadron of tan plastro clones.
As far as CONS to this game. I would like to see more variability of playing views. A first person would be great, though I admit that tends to make things a little TOO real. Movement is a bit limited sometimes. I finally figured out how to run sideways, but it was not easy. Hold down the L or R C-button (N64)and push the stick the way you want to go. Great tactic. Backing is very slow, and if you get too active running in circles around an enemy, the floating camera has a hard time keeping up. The fog is ever present, especially in the larger levels. The graphics are not as real as in many games, but the explorability and suspense make up for that. It would be fun if there were things like bullet holes in doors and walls when you shot them, but then these are plastic bullets.
