Whatever you do, DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS GAME. This is the best racing game on the N64, and maybe even the best game on the N64. I know it sounds like a sell out game, but it's seriously not. The graphics are awesome, and the tracks are filled with hidden passages, secret items, and other stuff. The game combines elements from some of the best games on the N64, such as Top Gear Rally, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Kart 64, and even Goldeneye, to make one sweet game.
The game would be easy to beat if you just went through and tried to beat everyone on the course, but you're not supposed to do that. As you race through each course, you must collect bonus points that are hidden in different places. If you collect 50, you get a continue, which lets you continue in the championship even if you get last place. But, if you get 100, which are all the ones in the course, you get a new multiplayer arena. And I must say, multiplayer mode in this game is incredibly awesome and unpredictable. Instead of just trying to kill the other guy with various power ups such as rockets, booby traps, and invincibility, you also have to collect the 6 colored beetles. The first person to collect all 6 has to get to the exit, but every time someone kills you, you lose one beetle. So, you could have all 6 beetles, and then someone comes up from up behind you and *boom*, you're done. Anyway, the multiplayer mode is KILLER in this game.
The tracks are filled with hard-to-get and find bonuses. Just like in Goldeneye, there is a cheats menu. If you collect the hidden daisy boxes, new cheats are added to your menu. They are hidden *very* well. And the 100 bonus points in each course are also hidden well, like in one course, Mount Mayhem, there is a HUGE jump you have to make in order to get up to a ledge to collect some bonus points. Things like that make this game very challenging.
Along with earning more multiplayer arenas, new courses, and cheats, you also have to earn more cars. Each time you complete a championship level, you are given new cars, such as a police beetle, a multi-colored alien beetle, and a bunch of others.
In conclusion, this game has no flaws (although a paint shop like in Top Gear Rally would be nice...) It is perfect for both the experienced gamer, and the novice gamer, and extremely fun for everyone. The multiplayer mode is *perfect* for parties or if you just want to play with someone else one day. The graphics are great, and so is everything else. Why are you still reading? Go out and get this game!!!
