eagltigr's Full Review: Destruction Derby for Nintendo 64
The sound of Metal scraping concrete is music to your ears as you ram your opponent from behind in a sneak attack. But more often than not you will find yourself rammed as you try to back up for another hit. I am not talking about every insurance company’s nightmare, just a great game for the Nintendo 64 game system.
I discovered this game when I took my children with me to Blockbuster to rent a video, my son came running up to me with the case hollering “look Mommy, a crash up game!” Because they had wholeheartedly enjoyed the only real demolition derby I had taken them to I figured I would get the game because the odds were that they would play it.
There are Two basic game play modes: destruction race and destruction derby, there is single player or multi player capability. In a destruction race you race your car (no real selection of car other than color to start, you can earn better cars in the destruction race though) against 11 others, 6 in one direction 6 in the other. The idea of this race is to cause as much damage as you can because to win you have to be the last car remaining that is still driveable, you have a damage meter on your screen so you can judge how much you have suffered and you score points for every hit on other cars. To qualify for the next race you have to make a certain place, which is different for every race.
In the destruction derby you are going head to head with another person and 10 computer operated cars and you have a choice of 4 different games here, a regular derby. Capture the flag, in which you have to score points by capturing your opponents flags while protecting your own from capture. Then there is a bomb derby in which there is a bomb set to go off every 30 seconds and you have to avoid getting it and when you do you have to hand it off before it explodes or you are out of the race. Last is head to head derby in which you go head to head with your human opponent in a sudden death match.
When you play the race mode and complete the entire circuit you receive a better car every time, first you receive a large sedan, then a truck, after the truck a taxicab which does a great deal of damage, then the last one I was able to get was an ambulance which was almost indestructible as with it I won every race or derby I entered.
I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys car games and especially to children who, as we all know really enjoy destroying things when they play games. A game where you have to do as much damage as possible is really out to capture their little hearts!!
