Brandon_L's Full Review: Extreme-G XG2 for Nintendo 64
Extreme G2 is a very fun futuristic racing game, intended for those who want to play an extreme racing game. If you want an easy racing game, go somewhere else. If you want the best-looking cars, go somewhere else. If you want to ride a cool bike at a fast speed (or a tank in multiplayer), XG2 is an excellent choice.
Game play: Playing is very good and fun. Learning the controls are easy, and they are customizable.
Game modes: If you like extreme racing, there's a mode and difficulty level for you. For multiplayer mayhem, there are multiplayer battlegrounds (2-4 players), where the object is to be the last one standing (racing). The cup challenge (1-2 players) is fun, as you have to outrace your competitors. Don~{!/~}t get hit too much. The head-to-head (2-4 players) mode is also a lot of fun, where you try to outrace your friends.
Weapons: Extreme G2 gives you a good variety of weapons. Weapons include rear-firing rockets, ion side canons, magnetic mines, proximity mines, and the gun that targets itself to its closest competitor (if he's close enough). I like the last gun the best, because I can get close to an enemy, and shoot him into oblivion. I also like the rear-firing rocket, as I can actually see its path in a small window.
Levels: There are 12 completely different racing levels, an each has 3 variations of it (Some are much harder than others), plus about 12 battle levels.
Bikes: There are plenty of great bikes out there, each with different attributes (shown). If you~{!/~}re good enough on one of the cup challenges, you can earn a ~{!0~}superbike.~{!1~}
Graphics: The graphics are very good throughout the game. This is required when you have levels as complex as some of XG2~{!/~}s racing levels. Most games race in two dimensions, with the third dimension (height) being the ground. XG2 often races in three dimensions, where the ground changes in many levels. Another tribute to the graphics come when a car explodes. You can see the smoke, the mayhem before, and the sounds bring them to life. Little things like turbo boosts don~{!/~}t hurt.
Sound: The sound was superb. The soundtrack was very interesting, and keep you listening. I like the voice of the lady who announces the weapons you get. The real tribute goes to the sound effects, which will keep your attention.
The down side: Those who are used to racing on only 2 dimensions (no loops) might get dizzy.
Learning curve: Playing is easy.
Difficulty: The game has 3 difficulty settings, for hardcore racers. ~{!0~}Easy~{!1~} is hard enough for most.
Replay value: This is a classic extreme racing game. Hardcore gamers will play this for a long time.
Best intended for: The game is played best when multiple players race each other. However, the battle mode can steal the show.
