tommy_lop's Full Review: Golden Eye 007 for Nintendo 64
Now ordinarily I hate the first person genre. All the games I have seen have been basically mindless running around shooting anything that moves, and the enemies have pathetic AI basically just stand around letting you shoot them. Basically most of the ones I play are all gore and no brains required.
Now that said I was a bit skeptical when I picked up goldeneye but I was hooked in no time, not only is this game different then the other first person shooters, but it required more brains then a fast trigger finger.
Story.
The terrorist agency Janus has stolen the pirate helicopter and the goldeneye-firing disk. It will be up to 007 James Bond to stop them before they can fire it on London. Bonds trip will take him from Seryaneya to St. Petersburg and all the way to Cuba. While the plot is not exactly the same has the movie (Bond never visits Seraneya in the movie) however all the sets in the movie are here, but more on that has we move to the graphics.
Graphics
Has I have stated all the sets are here from the movie, and they have been copied on to the N64 marvelously. A lot of details have been put in the stages, and it's obvious why Rare changed the story so Bond could go to Serenaya twice.
While the enemies and the sprites all have boxed head looks that have to remember that the game is 4 years old, and basically just a first generation N64 console game. However each of the enemy has there own faces, the main character have faces taken off the movie, mean while standard soldiers have faces taken off the designers of the game.
Sound.
There is a lot of James Bond music in the game that will get you filling in the mood of whatever stages. Whether it's a stage where you are sneaking around, to a stage where you have to anilate every guard that you come across the music defiantly fits in the game. Has far has sound effects you can hear every bullet that comes whizzing around bonds head. Also each gun has a certain amount of noise it makes, and this is important enemies can hear weapon fire and close in on Bond if he gets to trigger happy with a loud gun. Sometimes it's better to let enemies go if they don't see you then to start shooting.
Gameplay.
If I hadn’t hinted enough gameplay is great. In each stage you will have different objectives that you have to do. If you don't complete all the objectives, or fail at them you won't be able to move on to the next stage. For example in one stage you have to find a communications room and shut off the communications dish. If you manage to botch turning off the communication dish or just forget to it when you reach the exit you will have to start all over again. Has you up the difficulty the more objectives you have to complete, and the smarter the enemies will get. Also Bond won't be able to take has much damage at greater difficulty levels and won't be able to pick up has much ammo either. Making the new objectives all that harder to achieve.
Weapons.
There are several different weapons Bond will be able to use to complete the game, some are better then others. You should also note that a weapons noise should also be considered.
Worse Weapons.
These are the weapons you should use if there the only one available. If you have anything else you should seriously think about switching.
DD4 Dosletove.
The Dosletove is a pistol gun similar to Bond's PP7. Except that it's more powerful, and holds one extra bullet. Why did it make it to this list, because it's slow and it's loud. Firing this thing off will attract everybody's attention within a 3-mile radius. To make matters worse it won't fire fast enough to kill the incoming guards that will probably be coming at you. All though you can use this gun to attract guards to a booby trap you have set up.
Klobb.
For a machine gun this thing is relatively quiet, however it's still to loud to be used while sneaking around. It's also only holds 20 bullets and is not very powerful. If you have another type of fast firing guns then you should think about switching.
Weapons for spying
Sneaking around and trying not to get caught, an occasional run in with a guard will happen. These are the weapons you might want to choose to get rid of guards with out to much attention.
PP7 silence
Bond will start out the level with this gun in hand (all though not always silence). While not has powerful has some gun it's quite and fairly fast. It should take out one guard before he goes tattles to his friends.
Sniper Rifle.
These things are relatively quiet and have a high powered scope, you can get a head shot (instantly fatal) to any guard nearby without him even noticing.
Bare Hand.
While this isn’t going to win any powerful weapon award it's doesn’t make any noise at all. On top of that it won't cost you any ammo, just make sure your quick in using it because it's incredibly short ranged.
Power weapons.
Have the guards all ready set off an alarm then you will need a weapon. Here are a few guns you should think about packing.
Couger Magnum.
Now I complain that the dosletove was to slow and loud, why have a gun that is even slower and louder. Because it has the power to make up for it that’s. A hit to the body or head of any guard is usually fatal, on top of that it can go through one guard and hit another. It can also be fired thorough doors and other obstacles. Just make sure you don't hit any instant civilians while using it.
KF7 Soviet.
Your standard Machine Gun. It has a scope and can hold 30 bullets at a time. It's fairly fast and powerful, it also has a scope for hitting enemies from far away. All though it is very noisy so don't use it in less your in trouble. This gun is the most common machine gun in the early levels, in later levels you might try to pick up it's older brother the assault rifle.
RCP-90.
This gun may look like a reject from star trek, but it will turn Bond into the Bondatator. It's very loud so any guards in the area will know you will be around, however this time it's an advantage. The RCP-90 power is about equal but not quite to that of a cougar magnum, plus it's ultra fast. Did I also mention it can hold a clip of up to 80 bullets. With this gun Bond can mow down any enemy squad that gets in his way.
Unlockables.
This wouldn’t be a Nintendo game if there isn’t something to unlock. While there are push button codes out there, the most legitimate way to unlock them is to beat a level, on a certain difficulty, under a certain amount of time. The codes can do anything to let Bond carry around more weapons, to do funny thing like giving the characters extra big heads and arms.
Suggestion.
If you own an N64 and haven't picked up this game what's wrong with you, this is one of the best N64 games out there and it needs to be in your collection.
