| moosechops's Full Review: Mario Party 2 for Nintendo 64 |
At the request of several people, I am going to rewrite this review, giving more detail and such. Also, for parents who may read my reviews (Yeah right), I'm going to start putting a parental warning, telling them what content each game has, so they can make the best choices for their kids.
First of all, when I got this game, I was interested to try the new thing that some games were starting to pick up on-party games. Mario Party 2 was the main one that was out at the time, so I picked up that one, and ended up being maybe not disgusted with it, but definitely disappointed.
First, I guess I'll start with graphics. The graphics are not bad in this game. They're not like any of the great games out for the 64, but then again they're not intended to be, so I won't take anything off for graphics.
The sound isn't bad, but can be irritating. I particularly got tired of hearing the characters voices, especially Princess Peach's. Other than the voices, the sounds are your basic Mario game sounds, which aren't bad.
The control is simple to pick up, and only takes a matter of minutes to learn, so there's no real problems here either.
Now, the gameplay. This is where the game suffers. The whole board game concept is innovative, no doubt, but it just doesn't work very well in a $50 package like this. First, like a real board game, you draw numbers (sort of) to see who "rolls" the dice first. Nothing wrong with that, that wasn't where the problem was. Then you roll a dice and whenever you land on a spot on the board, it does something (gives coins, takes away coins, etc.). When everyone has gone through their turns, a mini-game between all the players will begin. My main problem with all this is that a)the board game has nothing to do with skill, so like a board game, if you land in a good spot, you just got lucky, and b)it is extremely boring waiting for everyone to take their turns. The mini-games themselves are actually pretty fun, and there is a part of the game where you can buy all the mini-games and just play them. The problem with that is is that mini-games will only last so long, and you can't base a whole game on them.
Bottom line: If you have a few hours to kill and some money you don't mind spending, find four friends, and have a fun few hours. Otherwise, I personally would not spend any money on this game.
Parents: This game contains nothing that a parent should offensive.
