Mario and his friends are back in the second installation in this popular party game series.Play as either Mario,Luigi,Yoshi,Wario,Peach,or Donkey Kong.Even though I really do enjoy this game,I'll be honest and admit the only reason I got this is because my girlfriend always complained about how I never had any games she could play with me. This also makes a great game to play if you have a group of buddy's over.
Turning on the game,you begin at the infromation board.Here you can either pick the adventure board of your choice,go to rules land,visit the option laboratory,or go to mini-game land.....There are five boards to choose from.There's Pirate land,Western land,Space Land,Mystery land,or Horror land.Each has it's own little theme and annoying happenings to ruin your winning streaks.There's also a hidden board if your good enough to find it.....In rules land,your show a demo of the game.It does a great job of explaing how to play.....In mini-game land,you can buy mini-games you've played already.There's a coin box to show how many coins youv'e collected and can spend.There's also a record's bottle so you can see all the record that have been set in some of the mini-games.Once you've bought a number of mini-games you can play the mini-game coaster.This is a single player mode in which you play mini-games,and you'll win something special if you can defeat it.Also after buying some mini-games the mini-game stadium will open.At first theres only one mode,but after buying more, two more modes will show up.....At the option laboratory there are five ways to mess with the game.Check out Professor Fungi's computer and you can see how many times you've played each adventure board,character's win and loss record's and other stuff.At the orange playlist you can hear different sound samples heard during gameplay.Set the sound to either stereo or mono at the sound machine.Or finally go to the trash compactor to erase all the saved data.
After choosing an adventure board to play on,you set the number of players and which characters you'll be using.Then you set the computer players skill levels,ranging from easy to super hard.Set the number of turns each player will have-Lite play is 20 turns,Standard is 35,and full is 50.It takes a long time just to finish a lite game,so I would suggest you choose that.You can choose whether or not to have a bonus setting.In the bonus setting you can find hidden blocks on some of the blue spaces during game play.It could have a star in it or just some coins.Plus three awards are given out at the end of the game and the winner of each recieves a star.Then the order is determined by hitting a block and the highest number goes first.
The rules of the game are as follows.To start your turn you hit a spinning dice block and move the amount of spaces shown.Land on a blue space and you get three coins.Landing on a red one will take three away. Land on an "!" space and a single player mini-game begins.Land on an "?" space and different things happen depending on what game board your on.For example, if your playing the pirate game,a ship fire's a cannon at you, sending you to the beginning of the board.An item space is a single player mini-game and gives you a shot at getting various items to help you.Each time you pass the Koopa Bank space you must deposit five coins.Land on the space and you'll get all the money everyone has deposited!If you stop on a bowser space he'll do his best to take anything you've got.And lastly there's the battle space.Landing on this will cause a four player battle where coins are taken from everyone.The winner and second place will get all the coins put up for grabs.
there are a few characters who stand around the board that you will meet up with.Toad will trade you a star for twenty coins.Each time a star is bought,he will move to a different spot on the board.Baby bowser will steal 5 coins from you each time you pass him.There is also an item that will transform baby bowser into THE bowser,then your really done for.Then there's Boo.Boo will steal a star or coins from any player you'd like him to.But it'll cost you 5 coins for him to steal coins and 50 coins for him to steal a star.If you press the "A" button really fast,sometimes you can keep him from taking a whole bunch of coins.
Passing the Item shop you can buy various items.But if you dont have enough coins or already have an item,you cant get anything.A mushroom is will let you hit 2 dice instead of one when it's your turn.The skeleton key will let you open gates at crossraods in the game.The plunder chest lets you steal an item from someone but it wont let you choose who.Buying the dueling glove will let you duel an opponent in a mini-game in which the winner gets the coins youve both put up for grabs.Warp Block will switch you and another players spots on the map,but once again you cant choose who.It's done at random.Buying a golden mushroom will let you hit 3 blocks when it's your turn.If you buy a genie lamp he will take you straight to toad to buy a star.The Boo Bell will make Boo appear at your space.The bowser suit allows you to run around and steal coins from people.And the bowser bomb makes baby bowser transform into bowser.He'll hit three dice and steal all coins from any player he meets.
Before you start a mini-game you can can read the explanation screen to see how to play or choose to practice before you play for real.If everyone lands on either a blue space or a red space then it's a 4 player mini-game.The last person alive wins.If your the one player to land on either a red or blue space while everyone else is on the other color, then it's a 1 on 3 game.You have to beat all three other players to win. If 2 players land on red and 2 on blue than you'll play a 2 on 2 game.So be a good teamate and dont blow it for your partner.Whoever wins the mini-game will get ten coins.
When it get's down to the last five turns,things change a little bit. Blue and red spaces are now worth 6 coins and if two people land on the same space then they'll play a duel mini-game.Whoever has the most stars at the end of the game is the numba one beeyatch.If you tie on stars with someone else you'll both hit a spinning dice to see who wins.For each star you've gained,fifty coins will go into your coin box.
I think this game is a blast,but it's really only fun if you've got a few people to play with.Playing with yourself is no fun at all.It's like, well,really playing a board game by yourself.I think the mini-game coaster is a bit too hard.I can't get past the jump rope stage.But my final word would be,if you have a lot of frineds who come over and play on your 64 all the time,then this is a great choice to buy.But if your pretty much the only person who would ever play it,then I suggest to move on.
