| butted80's Full Review: Mario Party 2 for Nintendo 64 |
Nintendo is known for its reputation on making the best sequels to many of its games, and Mario Party 2 is no exception. The multiplayer facet part of the game is the obvious standout, but don't under-estimate the capabilities of the computer-controlled characters or how skill is not always what you need.
If you want to buy a game that will create fun for all, then you need not look any further. MP2 is a game designed for four human players to have a great time. This part of the game is not always about winning, but on keeping others from winning also. Your friend may be ahead of you in stars (what you collect in order to win) so you help another player win just to foil the plans of the leader. The fun part comes when you hurt the player you were just helping. The game breaks down to constantly forming and breaking alliances on a fun, simple board game.
If you are not in the company of anyone to play with, you can still have fun by competing against the computer-controlled players. With up to four difficulty settings for the CPU, players of all skill levels can enjoy this game. With one-player designed areas (Mini-Game Coaster) for players, this game covers those lone gamers very well.
If you feel like your friends have an advantage because they have played it longer than you, don't. This game more often than not is decided by the luck of the draw. A considerable number of mini-games are built in this way ( in Bowser's Big Blast, you pick a switch and hope you don't bite the big one) to keep the game from becoming too one-sided. If you are leading in stars, you will always feel that everything is going wrong for you or that the game is trying to make you lose. All of you skilled players out there do not have to worry, many mini-games are dependent on skill to win. This game is one you will not put down for a long time.
