This game breaks all the rules of football bringing you a hard-hitting, bone-crunching good time! The arcade style of play is easy to learn, and very fun to play.
The Rules...or lack thereof
The game is your basic 7-on-7 score the most points type game. You choose from three pages of offensive plays to try to beat your opponent for a touchdown, or kick a field goal. On defense you get to sort through 9 different plays, mostly blitzes, and try to take out the QB. Use any means necessary ( and usually unnecessary!) to prevent the other team from making a thirty yard first down on four downs. You can blitz the QB, tackle the receivers on their routes, or go for the pick. And don't hold anything back, because it's all legal!
Gameplay
The first time you pick up the controller, it is very simple to control. You can use the C buttons to pass, or hit the high-lighted receiver or back. The game takes no time to learn, and is fun right off the bat. Your basic maneuvers are the stiff arm, the spin, a jump, or a dive. Use turbo wisely to get an edge, and learn which plays are good for each situation. The graphics are nothing special, but this game was not made to be realistic. Each NFL team is in the game with 7 selected players on offense and defense. The games are quick, fun, and filled with big hits and huge plays.
Sound
The music is the same thing over and over, but you hardly notice it. The sound effects the players make are what make this game interesting. Besides the typical steroid grunts and steam roller hits blasting the opposition, the player chatter is pretty comical. Taunting and raving are just as common as in the NFL that we love so dearly. The announcers give the play by play, and basically just describe the vicious hits.
Features
You can choose from your basic exhibition game or start your own season with a team. The season is normal length, and doesn't take very long to play. You can check out your stats and your record untill you hopefully reach the playoffs. One of the things that I like about this game is the play editor. It is fun to create your own offensive and defensive plays, and see just how bad ( well for me anyway!) a coordinator you would make. It's great to see if your play can actually work, or just as much fun to check out how much time you wasted trying to outsmart the CPU. Also, an added feature from the old blitz is getting on fire. When you crush the offense for a loss twice in a row, or hit the designated receiver, your team has unlimited turbo, and strength that would rival a 16 wheeler.
Overall
If you are a football game looking for a realistic depiction of the gridiron glory you see on MNF, stay away from this game. If you are looking for the hard hits, crazy arcade game that will bring you laughs and a good time, than this is the game for you. Blitz is great for 1-4 players, and one of those games you just hafta have!
