Pros: Nothing really
Cons: Cheesy graphics, bland gameplay, cars barely control the way they should
Penny Racers is a pretty bad racing game. The cars aren't the size of pennies, so I don't know what the title is referring to, but just the same, the game really makes no sense on any level that I can see. At its heart it's just a pretty mediocre racing game and that seems to be all it aspires to be. But it's also flawed in the gameplay department to an extent that it's a little more than subpar.
The gameplay here is pure racing and nothing else. The cars are compact, like a very delicate foreign car that would topple and crash in the wind, but they're not penny-sized. If the game is about compact cars, it's weird because no human being would physically fit in these cars anyway. Penny Racers isn't really an accurate title here. Maybe Lilliputtian People racers.
You select a class (difficulty) vehicle, and track, and you're off. Nothing about this game matters because of how poorly it controls. Driving, turning, and even actions as simple as braking seem completely out of the player's hands. Accelleration and braking are so idiotically delayed it's concerning. I don't even understand why to be perfectly honest.
It's hard to tell if the vehicles control the same or differently, but it's almost irrelevant. Actually most of the gameplay is irrelevant. The opposing vehicles seem to have no AI and do just whatever the hell they want to. And even when you get ahead in this game it seems like the game is willing to screw you over by suddenly hitting you with a turn that you have no control over. These are simply some of the worst, most delayed controls I have ever seen in a racing game, I almost wonder if my inputs are doing anything half the time.
When you finish a race you can steal an item from an opposing vehicle that you've beaten. That would be cool if I had any idea what any of these items do. Not to mention that the opposing cars aren't a challenge, they have no AI and just erratically crash into you. There are items like spike traps and the like, but the very idea that you'd control these cars into even lining something like that up is preposterous. The audio is bad, it's this really bizarre Japanese music that just sounds a bit too cheery for a racing competition. And the graphics are like pre cell-shaded nightmares, completely devoid of character, and while they don't look horrific, they are cheesy enough to make me cringe my way into never wanting to look at this game again. Avoid.
