eatmor's Full Review: Perfect Dark for Nintendo 64
Beginnings Goldeneye was the first of the first person sims to catch my attention. I remember the challenging missions, but most of all the hours spent with friends playing multiplayer. I would think to myself that this was the best game ever, but I wish it did this or that. Well, doing all this, that, and more than Goldeneye, Perfect Dark is Goldeneye made perfect. While it is not Bond, it is the future with rival agencies battling each other in the middle of aliens, clones, artificial intelligence, and much more.
Controls
Everything is like Bond which makes it perfect for Bond experts to pick up quickly. Of course, there are now new complications and options making more moves possible. For instance, holding "B" can change a weapons' mode. Secondary modes range from stealing opponents weapons and pistol whip actions to magazine unload and grenade launcher. You now have more options of attack and more moves to conquer.
Weapons
In Bond, if you were good with a pistol, you could take most opponents regardless of what they had, but now, the weapons are better. Futuristic forms of the old weapons, alien technology, and secondary modes all come into play with this game. There are so many different weapons such as a "Super Dragon" which is a artillery rifle coupled with a grenade launcher, the "Crossbow" that has a sedate mode or a one-hit kill mode, and the "Slayer" which is a rocket launcher that can also shoot remote controlled rockets. The options keep coming with this game.
Carrington Institute
All these options can frighten someone from learning the possibilities. So, the Carrington Institute is available for all sorts of training. From combat and controls the weapons and technology, the Institute makes sure you will know what to do.
Missions
The single player missions are wonderfully entertaining. Far better than that of Goldeneye which had to stick to the movie (Not that it wasn't one of the best Bond films ever), the story line and missions intertwine objectives and action well. Furthermore, they come in the same three difficulties as before. In addition to single player, the missions can be played as a co-operative or a counter-operative. Co-operative allows two team-mates to play the missions together, and counter-operative allows a second player to assume different roles as the enemy against you in the same missions.
Multiplayer
The best part of the game. Up to four human players and eight simulants can battle it out in one of sixteen arenas including three from Goldeneye (the Complex, the Felicity, and the Temple). The simulants have different difficulties as well as different personalities to choose from such as a Cowardsim which fights on the run. You can choose weapons from twelve pre-set combinations, custom pick, or randomly pick from all the weapons. Also, you can pick and divide up as teams anyway you could possibly want. There are endless options.
Multiplayer Scenarios
In addition to normal combat, there are five other scenarios to play in multiplayer mode. "Hold the Briefcase" is an improvement to "flag tag" from Goldeneye where you find the briefcase and earn points by holding it and running around in the arena. In this game, you can still use your weapons while holding the briefcase. "Hacker central" involves the Data Uplink which you must find, fight for, and then hack into a computer for points. While you are hacking in the computer you are defenseless, so you must be careful in your timing. "Pop a Cap" like "Hold the Briefcase" staying alive earns you points while being it. The player to kill the targeted player becomes the targeted player instead of having to fight over the briefcase. "King of the Hill" is where you must find, fight over, and hold a selected area for a period of time to earn points. As with all the games, this can be done in teams, and the more team-mates in the area at the end of the time period the more points earned. "Capture the Case" involves each team has one case, they try to take the other team's case and bring it back to there own for points. All of these scenarios as well as normal combat are found in over twenty pre-set challenges, where you play on a team of up to four humans against various pre-set simulants in different scenarios. They truly become challenging.
Other Attributes
The graphics are great the expansion pack is definitely noticed. Proof lies in the clarity of the graphics when playing in the complex in Perfect Dark as opposed to Goldeneye. The video scenes are great. The sound effects out do Goldeneye easily. Overall, this is the most incredible game made to date.
