Here's the premise: Three employees of a twisted company bent on "making toxic waste yummy" are exposed to some of this tasty goo and are transformed into huge animal-like monstrosities. So, they get pissed, and wreck stuff, and eat, and have a pretty rockin' time, hoping to stop their employers from ever doing evil like this again. That's pretty much it. You can choose to play as any one of the monsters: George, the King Kong look-alike; Lizzy, the Godzilla clone; or Ralph, the wolf thing.
The control was put together very nicely, with the choice of using the analog stick or the d-pad, which my Playstation-owning friends appreciate. You can configure the buttons however you like, but the default setup works just as good.
There are lots of ways to destroy a building in this game, from kicking a whole floor out, or punching each window out individually, to just getting on top and jumping on it. And then there's eating, heh heh. All you have to do here is hold down and punch to toss an innocent bystander in your mouth.
Thanks to the power of the N64, there's also a multiplayer mode where you can cooperate with two friends to destroy cities. And, every little once in a while they give you the ability to fight for supremacy against your fellow monsters. Thanks to the simple control, anyone can pick up Rampage and start playing. The gameplay gets repetitive after awhile, but can get addictive. I've spent night after night up at 3 a.m. trying to get to another Scumlab.
The graphics are nice, but not nearly as nice as Yoshi's Story. The buildings look like buildings, the cars look like cars, etc. You encounter many different types of enemies along the way, which takes away some of the repetitiveness. I was impressed with the attention to detail. You'll find Pennsylvanian Amish in Philadelphia and Hula girls in Honolulu. And, for some reason, there's a roll of toilet paper in Big Ben. Everything looks smooth and polished, just like it should. Also, gamers are treated to watching Dr. Betty Veronica tally up your scores between levels (and in a very tight spacesuit in the ending).
The sound is perfect. You can hear the groans and grunts of each monster who has its own distinct personality. Also, if you crank the music up all the way, you'll be pleased. It's mostly electric guitar riffs and dramatic orchestras. Most of my friends are humiliated when they're caught jammin' to the soundtrack.
All in all, I think it's a pretty cool game. If it was done fully 3D, it'd be perfect. It's not for everyone, but for a fan of old arcade games, Rampage can't be beat. Plus, it's great to show it off to PlayStation owners who bought the two-player version, heh heh.
