Pros: Dual controller option, good gameplay, cheesy techno music
Cons: Repetitive, poor graphics, memory pack needed to save
The Bottom Line: Fast, addictive gameplay, with poor graphics and cheesy sound. Worth the trouble if you find it for a good price.

Judging from the negative reviews this game has received, it is obviously not for everyone, however it's not as bad as many people think.
Gameplay: This game is a remake of an arcade classic. Although I haven't actually played the original, you can play the shockwave port at shockwave.com. Now for those of you who have not played the original, the gameplay is very simple, your objective is to kill all the bad guys, and rescue the humans. In order to do this, the designers have allowed you to use a controller in each hand. This means you can use one analog stick to shoot, and one analog stick to aim, allowing for precise control. The default camera setting is above your character, and you must manipulate him around a large room shooting bad guys and rescuing people. Although this does get repetitive (there are 200 levels), there is some variation in the levels. Some are different shapes, others have laser beams, and others have mines. Also the game is kept fresh as new bad guys are introduced every few levels. The gameplay is reminiscent of Super Smash T.V. for the SNES, and in level 100 you even get to fight a huge boss. Bonus levels also add to the variety, and feature swarms of bad guys not found in other levels. The gameplay is fast and furious, and with tight simple controls the game is a blast to play.
Graphics: There's nothing new or amazing in the graphics department, mainly because there are so many bad guys the N64 would not be able to handle complex 3D models. There are no special lighting effects either. The graphics don't really add or subtract anything from the game, but some people who will look just at the games graphics will immediately declare it bad.
Sound: I personally liked the cheesy techno music as it really got you pumped while you were playing. There are 11 tracks which provide enough variety for an average gaming session. One thing I found annoying was the sound the people made as they were attacked by the robots, a sort of whiny screechy sound.
Everything Else: The game came with an adequate manual that explained everything that was going on in this crazy game (including the extremely weak plot). The intro is non-existent, and the menus are simple with no frills. The two player mode is just like one player, except you switch turns after every death. Another downside is there is no battery save so you need a controller pack to save your spot. Once you pass it, there isn't much else to do.
Overall this game has good gameplay, the question is are you willing to sacrifice graphics and extras for an otherwise good game.
