krial's Full Review: Star Wars: Rogue Squadron for Nintendo 64
The first few times I tried to play Rouge Squadron, I was terrible at the game. It is sometimes so hard that you want to throw it across the room. I tried over and over and over again to even earn a bronze medal in any one of the missions, but to no avail.
After I had played it for a few days, I finally earned a medal. Then I earned a couple silver medals, and got to play a new mission. This mission proved to be three times longer than any of the first missions, and I tried ten times to even finish it, but couldn't do it.
The controls are not bad, though sometimes it feels as if you cannot turn around, but merely fly in circles instead. I also find myself hitting the secondary weapon button instead of the booster button when I fly the X-Wing, and keep wasting my missiles for no reason.
It's not that the missions actually contain any one part that is terribly difficult either, but instead contain many small things to do that are slightly difficult. If you don't manage to complete one of these objectives, you fail the mission.
Upon completion of a mission, you are rated in different aspects such as accuracy, enemy kills, friendly saves, completion time, etc. You need a certain number in each category to qualify for a medal. The higher the medal, the higher the numbers. It is terribly hard to earn a gold medal... I had enough trouble with bronze and silver.
You get to fly different crafts for different missions. Each craft has different features, but they all control about the same, so you do not really have to relearn the controls in order to fly a different craft. Craft features vary, such as missiles, tow cables (for wrapping around those pesky Emperial Walkers), etc.
Though the game is very hard, it is strangely addicting. You can hardly tear yourself away from it, unless you get mad at the fact you are losing so often and shut it off. But even then, five minutes later you are sitting there playing it again.
