tommy_lop's Full Review: Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 64
All of Nintendo stars come together in one great tournament fighting game. Now we can see who is a better Nintendo mascot the classic plumber himself Mario, or the little cute electric rodent Pikachu.
There are also a lot of other Nintendo character in this game that are not has popular but still have there own game series. You can pick from Luigi, Ness (from earth bound), captain falcon (F-zero), Samus (metroid) Link (Zelda series), Fox McCloud (star fox), Yoshi, Jigglypuff, (Pokemon), And Kirby. In this game these characters go head to head to see who is tougher and who can duke out has much damage has possible. You win when you knock your opponent off the edge of the game board, or into a hole.
Graphics
The game is in 2d just like old school tournament fighters, the characters look a little bit flater then what they should be. They also look worse from there own 64 games that they have star in. Link for one think doesn’t even look close to what he did in ocarina of time.
Also the Pokemon that come out of a weapon you can get call Poke balls look like they where from the NES days, they are that flat. Oh well graphics don't make a game and they certainly don't make this one.
Sound
The graphics could be better but the sound is top notch, especially if you are a classic Nintendo player. Each players arena has music from that persons game, Link has a remix of the original theme to it, Samus has music from the original metorid, Fox stage has music from Star fox 64.
If you are a Super Mario bros. theme listener then Mario has two stages and two remix of his original theme for you. In the Peaches castle stage, which is one of the stages you have to battle thorough on one player they have the modern day steel drum mix of his theme.
On a stage call mushroom kingdom which you have to unlock, the music them is that of the original 8-bit music theme from the original Super Mario bros., no steel drums in this baby.
Game Play
I am going to separate this into two categories the one player game mode, and the two player game mode.
One player mode
If you are a hermit that lives in the woods and only has a Nintendo 64 with one controller then this game is definitely not for you. The one player mode will last you a day at most before it starts boring you to death. It's the same thing over and over again, you'll probably end up only playing this mode to unlock secret characters, boards, and options menu.
Multi Player mode
This game is almost has fun has goldeneye, “almost”. If you have 3 friends over with four controllers you can easily stay up all night playing this game. Four players can play this game and the fun never stops. With each arena being completely different from the others and customizable weapons menu, you will be fighting each other all night long.
Also the game is customizable so you can set the number of lives and time in multi player mode anywhere between 1 to 99 minutes long, this is great if you fell like smashing all day, or just for a quick few minutes.
Ease of learning
The one thing that drives a way a lot of people from the tournament fighting games is the button combos. Especially if your friends has been playing it for months straight and knows every button combo there is in the game, and is to big of a jerk even to let you know any of the basic moves. How are you going to even stand a chance against him if he knows all the moves and you can barley jab.
Relax this does not happen in Smash bros., the controls are easy to learn and to master. The control stick moves the character, the c buttons jump, R allows you to throw, Z blocks, and A attacks and picks up weapons.
The special moves are even easier to learn. Up on the control stick B does a jump attack (ex Mario multi coin punch), Down B does a ground move (ex Kirbys rock crush), and just taping B usually fires off a special punch or fire ball (ex DK special punch, and fox’s laser.)
This is also great for kids seeing how they can now play without having to be confused about button combinations.
Violence
Yes this is a fighting game, but it’s far from being a mortal kombat game. There is no blood and gore in it, the violence is mainly slap stick.
In the end super smash bros. game is great for playing with players who are too young for goldeneye. It’s also great for people who don’t want to have to sit for an hour playing the Mario Party games.
