dakotaman's Full Review: Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 64
All hail to one of the best 4-player (fighting) games of all time! But, wait, it's not just a regular fighting game. Though ostensibly violent, Super Smash Brothers is somewhat of a party game where up to four players can go-head-to-head trying to knock each other's cartoon character off the board. (Can cartoon violence really be violence, anyway? Even so, cartoon fighting constitutes minimal violence.)
Each character (Mario, Fox, Kirby, Yoshi, just to name a few classics) in the melee has a damage meter which can be knocked all the way up to 999%. However, the more damage a character accrues the farther he or she will fly when hit. The objective is to make an opponent's character fly off the screen (and you'll hear a "pow!"). Up around 150% is dangerous: one good hit means good-bye for the character!
In addition to "standard" fighting techniques, power-ups frequently appear on the many boards of Super Smash Brothers. These range from bumpers that propel a character backwards to bombs that explode to hearts that replenish energy.
One drawback to this game is the one-player mode. It can be fun, but it gets old quickly. However, one player can play in multi-player mode against 3 other computer characters, which I highly recommend if you're going solo! (And, if you're really brave, try TEAM BATTLE: you vs. 3 computer characters on level 9!)
The enjoyment of the game is hard to understand unless it's played. If you've never played it, I urge you to rent it, especially if you can play with at least one other human player. You'll be addicted in no time!
