Microsoft and Ensemble have created a sequel which far surpasses the original Age of Empires. Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings maintains the real time strategy gameplay of the original but improves on graphics, control, and adds many new features. The time period of the game spans the dark ages through the imperial age, each stage giving new abilities. You may choose from 13 different civilizations, all with different attributes. Excellent replay value and gameplay will keep you playing this game for many, many hours.
The graphics are perhaps one of the greatest enhancements. The environment shows sharp detail, while the buildings portray well designed architecture. As your warriors and villagers perform some action, detailed characters. As battles are underway you can watch as each character performs their military ability. A new feature of AOE 2 is the outline of units when they are hidden behind an obstruction. This is very helpful in maintaining the gameplay locating units.
Some new features of AOE 2 include campaigns and improved multiplayer. There are 5 different campaigns, each including about 6 scenarios. These campaigns are very entertaining and force you to learn abilities not used in normal single player matches. As the campaigns continue, a narrator entertains you with a background of the story. The map editor is also a very helpful tool. Allowing you to create your own setup and victory conditions, you can never get tired of the game.
Other improvements help to set this game apart from others in its genre. New units/buildings/technologies are available, and each civilization has a unique unit and specially designed buildings. Not only can you build a large empire through military campaigns, but you can also expand by economic growth and diplomacy.
The only complaint I have about this game is the internet multiplayer. Often it did not connect correctly and I was not able to play online. Though this is not a very significant drawback, it can be annoying at times.
All in all, this game is probably the best real time strategy I have seen.
