GreenSpleen's Full Review: Total Air War for Windows
I participated in the open beta test for this game. I found it to be enjoyable, extra so since I could play on the same team as some of the other guys on my floor.
The reason I liked the game was the unlimited playability. This is not one of those games you beat and throw away, you continue to get your moneys worth every time you play it. Lots of different types of maps, and always enough people online to find a heated 16 vs. 16 matchup to join.
Unfortunately for those of you who like to keep statistics and be a part of squadrons, to enjoy that feature of the space combat, you need to pay an extra fee of $10-$20 per month. I can sympathise with the programmers that maintaining the web site takes a good bit of cash, yet I still don't want to pay per month to play a game I have already paid for. This particular game has some nice features unique to the Space combat genre. For one thing, a player on either team can be the 'commander' this player uses the money earned by his teamates to purchace new space stations and technology for the other players to use. Some of the commanding is done from a sector by sector live action view of space. The electronic field of vision and thier version of the cloaking device is new in concept as well. The cloak doesn't make you invisible, it masks your energy signature. The energy signature is what determines how close an enemy has to be in order to pick your ship up on radar. Capital ships energy signature is so high this feature would be useless. And besides, you are not invisible to eyes, just radar.
The major weakness would have to be the missles. I found it far to easy to take out an enemy base with the bombers, and of course this happens the other way around as well.
Overall, This is a fun game, but don't take it too seriously because a team that seems to be winning can easily be overrun by a single technology advancement.
