Let me start off by saying that I typically buy every AD&D computer game that comes out. I've been buying them since the very first one. Which, by the way, was "Pool of Radiance" if you didn't already know. I have loved a few of these games and been sorely disappointed by most them.
Nonetheless, I keep buying them. I love the genre, and I enjoy the good games. Baldur's Gate is not one of the good ones. It's one of the REALLY good ones. It's probably the closest I have seen to actually playing AD&D on the PC.
It's also incredibly addictive. I have wasted more hours than I care to admit on this game. I haven't even installed the expansion pack yet, but I probably will soon.
The storylines are engaging, and although they can be somewhat linear, they still give you enough options to ultimately drive the game in the direction you want. The characters are interesting and their personalities range from funny to serious to downright annoying, all of which they were intended to be. You can even tweak the personalities if you want to.
The combat is handled really well. It's a combination of real time and turn based. You can either direct your PCs in live combat or you can pause the action by simply tapping the spacebar, giving you all the time you need to issue orders.
This is not the best computer game I have ever played, but it is the best AD&D computer game I have ever played. I would recommend it to pretty much anyone who likes adventure or roleplaying games, even non AD&D ones.
