As a veteran of AD&D since the Gygax days I wondered if any computer game could ever come close to the real thing. Baldur's Gate does! In multi-player mode you can select your six character's races and classes and roll up their stats. You want multi-class characters? You got 'em! The terrain graphics are incredible and the AI works very well (with a few exceptions). There is a good plot and enough quests to keep you busy for a month if you played for 8 hours every day. You can select your character's appearance, clothing colors, and pre-programmed voices. If you want to, you can even record your own voice in original responses to match various game situations. As for potions and spells, there are more of each than you could ever possibly use. The game itself gives you several choices of voices for your characters but if you really want to have a variety of characters and voices to choose from, go to the website www.bgchronicles.com and you can choose from many many character's portraits and voices (including Xena and Gabriel). The game doesn't follow AD&D exactly however. You will find yourself being hit by enemies that wouldn't have a prayer of hitting you by AD&D standards but then ...what fun is it to be invulnerable? The only real problem I experienced was in negotiating narrow halls and mazes with the group. If a character's move is stymied, the AI tends to make them seek an alternate route and sometimes gets them into trouble. I bought the game when first out at $49.95 and I would do it again because it works out to cost less than a penny per hour of enjoyment. Of course, to realize the full potential of the game you should get the expansion "Baldur's Gate Tales of the Sword Coast" and install it before you get to the final confrontation. Just do it!!
