The newly released Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Game Baldur's Gate (2 Box Deluxe Edition)... I wanted it as soon as my friend John e-mailed me the URL with the preview QT movie.
Now that I have it installed (and have killed myself several times) I'm getting the hang of this game. It's not hard to do; it's so addictive I find myself taking a break because my legs have gone numb.
Let me tell you this - Baldur's Gate is like being able to get all my best gaming friends together and play for six or eight or twelve hours of a really great campaign with an excellent DM. All this, and whenever I want. No more "Well, I can't play until blah day" and "I have to work that weekend." This availability is one big plus for Baldur's Gate.
The second, and greatest, thing about Baldur's Gate is the graphics and interface. Somebody knew what they were doing. The graphics are incredible. I mean REALLY incredible. I finally get to see what evlven/dwarven infravision looks like. It's like all the campaigns I've played with the characters I've rolled up - the way it played in my head - is now inside the computer. You can hear the monsters making noise in the brush as they make a beeline for your party. You hear all the other great noises too. You hear the hacks, slashes, battlecries, screams - and the wisecracks, bored commentary and complaints.
The interface is great, you can see your party down the right side of the screen, and their status. You can tell via small sigils whether a member of your party is fatigued (along with the audible yawning), diseased, cursed, etc. And a red wash going farther and farther up the portrait of your character lets you know how badly they're getting beaten on.
Movement of the party is ingenious. You have choices of group formations - pyramid, t-shaped, pentagonal, inline, and so on.
But that's all I'm going to tell you. If you've ever fondly remembered that crit-20 you rolled and took down the Death Knight and saved your party, or when your Zen-Bowmaster Elf shot through an entire forest and nailed the evil Necromancer in the head - you HAVE to get this game.
